I don't read or write Thai, and my spoken Thai still have a lot to go before I can even converse fully in thai. Even before I can speak 10 Thai words, I can say I already have a good understanding of the Thai Culture and til today, I don't even converse with my wife in Thai. So does that put you in a better position to understand the Thais and their culture better than me?.

I put myself in a position if I could read, write and speak Thai fluently like a Thai, I still cannot find any advantage it will put me into, be in in business, personal, or whatever.
No one will open up just because you can speak their language . Agree

But able to speak or write their language ,can cheong at a cheaper rate for certain places

Like that you are the thai version of WEI SIAO BAO. All thai girls are the same jealous and $ minded are the most common disease that will occur. Too many wife is not a problem but no $ is big problem!

I dun doubt what you say and I never have. But do think about what if you can do what you do now, and then still be able do speak, read and write Thai like any other tha (ok ok granted not as good lah but ok enough), wouldn't your life be the richer for it? U can read all that you want to read out there in the original thai text, not somebody's edited and interpreted version. Not being able to speak/read/write Thais is not a shame, but you would accept that to able to do so, has to be an additonal advantage, surely? Wouldn't you agree with me? Why stop our learning process when the road ahead is obviously lined with more and better things to come? The human mind is capable of much more.

I never think in terms of we can have only A or B. I ask why can't we have A & B as well? Also, perhaps the people I talked to are seasoned netizens with a penchant for promoting Thailand and the Thai culture. Some of them are not even Thais but what they know might even embarass some apathetic thais. U probably know by now Internet geeks tend to share more and are also more open.

Lastly I am not saying that being able to speak read and write Thai will make that same person I am talking to, open up to me more and therefore tell me more, cos he wouldn't. I am saying that when this guy can't, I now have available to me a larger pool of thai friends and documented resources the world over who will tell me what I needed to know.

Plus when I meet established foreigners (from Japanese to Belgiums) living inside/outside LOS sharing the same idea, I feel that I am not on a path all alone my own and I certainly hope more bros here can join us on this exciting journey.

It is good to give their 'home cook' thai foods a try.

I initially also don't like it but later after a few trys.. i began to 'love' it.

You want to live like them, talk like them and be one of them.

First you must 'EAT' like them.

Think of Brunei jungle training days if you have to. haha !!

I don't like chili at all when i first came to thailand back in 90'.

Now chili is a 'must have' for my every meals here.

One very bad habit of thai ppls is that their money management is very

bad. They don't believe in saving for raining days except those thai chinese.

On the good side, they are a bunch of hardworking ppls.

Try to make use of their good way to your own advantage.

Create jobs for them is better than to give money freely.

Sometimes, it betters to have some sort of 'bank loans' like housing/car loans

to tie them down financially. This will indirectly force them to work harder

and your 'position' in the family has suddenly become 'indispensable'.

If you know what i mean.
