Thai court acquits nightclub owner after deadly inferno.

BANGKOK - The owner of a Bangkok nightclub destroyed by a fire that killed 67 people on New Year's Day in 2009 was acquitted of gross negligence Tuesday on appeal.

Visuk Setsawat, whose Santika Club was set ablaze by pyrotechnics during a performance by rock band Burn, was sentenced to three years in prison in September 2011 but was cleared by the Appeal Court in the Thai capital.

"The decision has changed to an acquittal of the first defendant (Visuk) on every charge," the court said in a statement posted on its website.

Boonchu Laosrinak, owner of Focus Light Sound System Company, the company that installed the pyrotechnics, was also sentenced to three years in jail in September 2011. His appeal was rejected by the court.

More than a hundred people were wounded, including 32 who suffered critical or life-changing injuries, according to the prosecutor at the original trial.

Hundreds of partygoers were inside the upmarket nightclub when it caught fire.

Three Singaporeans, one Japanese and a Myanmar national were among the dead, while scores of foreigners including some from Australia, France and Britain were injured.

Good memory. Atami soapie massage was one of the big MP joints back then, it had been closed down ( or changed name ) for 10+ years.

The Thai government is considering charging foreign tourists a 500-baht (US$16) entry fee starting in January 2014

Officials from the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, the Ministry of Public Health, and the Royal Thai Police had discussed the plan and all agreed with the idea.

They believe the extra charge would lead to an increase in the quality of tourists to Thailand.

The plan is also intended to keep foreigners from staying in the country after their visas have expired. There are some 100,000 foreigners in Thailand whose visas have expired but they refuse to leave the country, say reports.
While the government claims the entry fee will keep out low-quality tourists, the feedback from the tourism sector appears to be all negative.

It is just another good excuse for the govt to generate money for their failed policies, example their vote buying rice policy.

In 2012, there are about 22 mil ppl visiting Thailand. 22 mil multiply by 500THB. This is not a small figure.

As long as the lady monkey still there, the country will not improve and will get into deeper shit.

I remember many years back there was a B500 exit fee when u leave Thailand, paid via automated kiosk with a printed ticket for exit.

Back then the THB500 departure tax slip must be bought in cash from a counter at Don Mueang Airport.
Always kena PRC con artists trying to ask me to help them pay as reason was purse/wallet lost.

Thought was BHT700? Yeah remember the old Don Muang tat time. Always make sure have some bahts left over for taxi & airport tax! U never say also forget those PRC liao... also kana a few times... Boh Hiw Lan them!
