Re: Batam Info Thread

Just got back from Batam and found a gem.

As everyone is in a mood for sharing, I like to share what I found.

A good friend recommended me a local who came to my room for a two hour massage. I really think it is good but please dont take my word for it; try it for yourself. If you enjoy it as much as I, please pass the info on.

Leasing Batam to spore could be like leasing hong kong to the british or leasing macau to the portugese. However batam has not much natural resources like crude oil, etc that spore can make good use of and building casinos in Batam also makes no sense as there are already casinos at sentosa and marina bay.

Unless want to promote Batam as a sex destination place, grant brothel licence, legalise prostitution, develop beach resorts like Bali to attract westerners to come and generate lots of income from tourism so that there will be surplus after paying the rent to batam.

Orignally, Batam was a place for manufacturing, since labour/land cost is cheap and singapore can ship all high tech business and things there. However, due to Habiebie, who wanted Batam to is own, and so the deal was 30 years lease only. Singapore gov did not agree to it.

As for the scenic bridge proposed by Dr. M, it is to help his project in T. Palapas, south of Johor. Since no ships want to go there, becos of the causeway, he wanted to replace it with a overhead bridge, and Dr. M is also known as Mr 10 %. You figure out how much he can make from the deal.

With much more tourist coming, I am sure Batam will flourish( not only sex trade). When you got so much money pumped in, alot of people wins. THe biggest winner are the property owners.

And the road infrastructure will be revamped to cater to the huge car population. Overall, it is a winning situation for all.

Re: Batam Info Thread

Will we see price reduction after this?

SINGAPORE: Two ferry operators have been fined a total of S$286,766 for anti-competitive behaviour.

Batam Fast Ferry was fined about S$173,000 while Penguin Ferry Services was made to pay nearly S$114,000 for breaching the Competition Act.

The Competition Commission of Singapore (CCS) said on Wednesday that they had shared confidential price information on ferry tickets sold to corporate clients and travel agents on two routes.

The routes are Singapore (HabourFront) to Sekupang and Singapore (HarbourFront) to Batam Centre.

The CCS said the actions of the two ferry operators encouraged collusion and reduced the incentive to set independent pricing decisions competitively.

Given that the routes were served only by the two operators, the CCS said the price exchanges "further reduced the already limited competition in a duopolistic market structure".

This is the first time the watchdog found that a concerted practice infringed Section 34 of the Act.

That's good news? For us samsters maybe if they reduce the ticket prices but it is a slap to the INA government. I'm sure they will find a Singapore company to exact their pound of flesh to redeem the "face".

Habibie, ex-president who lasted only for one & half year (shortest duration among all president) before suceeded by megawati. He was an engineer who got his degree in germany and he is the one who oversee the project in construction of the 6 barelang bridges in batam that connects the islands of Batam to Rempang to Galang.

His plan was to transform the Rempang and Galang islands into industrial sites like present-day Batam. However, the bridge site has grown more into a tourist attraction rather than a transportation route. Can see many people relax and take picture there.

However heard from people that his diplomatic relation with spore was not that good, unlike lao lee and suharto seperti abang adik. Maybe because of this reason his discussion with spore about the economic co-operation deal in Batam failed.

No wonder when paklah cancell the project of the bridge, he criticise paklah as useless PM.

Heard people said that he like to give negative comments about spore and when lao lee went to malaysia last year, lee did not want to see him. Instead lee visit the pm, the opposition like dap and pas.

Batam property will definitely increase in value if the govt allow foreigners to own the properties without any lease, e.g. freehold.

If they allowed, then many sporean will definitely be more than willing to buy property there as an investment.

However, before batam want to attract sporean to buy property there, batam has to improve on its infrastructure first like :

1) Building proper pavement and overhead bridge for pedestrian.

2) Highway, underpass and flyover to ease the traffic jam.

3) More roads to link all the ulu place to the town

4) Improve on their public transport system too

Re: Batam Info Thread

eh from batam to singapore, you're blocking a major sea route from malacca straits to south china sea..

Penang to main land is okay cause its an island to mainland plus at the back of penang is the malacca straits so ships still can pass through..it will be more than 20km long because you'll have to elevate the bridge up at least 10-20 meters high to allow the tankers/freight liners to pass thru..

You got a point too. It is not practical and costly to ask the ship to travel from straits of melaka to pass pulau galang (south of batam) before reaching the south china sea.

So they need a elevated bridge for sure to allow direct accessibility.

Ya Pak, ferry business will definitely be badly affected if the bridge is built between batam & spore.

Small operator will definitely close shop...
