Former Liverpool striker John Aldridge has claimed the Reds are "now in a crisis", saying their Premier League form is "shambolic".

The Reds recently picked up their first trophy in six years by beating Cardiff in the Carling Cup final and they will be back at Wembley to face local rivals Everton in the FA Cup semi-finals a week on Saturday.

However, their form in the Premier League has been poor. Sunday's 2-0 defeat at Newcastle was their sixth in seven league games and they have lost eight out of 12 since the turn of the year, leaving them eighth in the table.

It is a situation Aldridge - who played under Kenny Dalglish in the 1980s during the Scot's first spell in charge - feels needs addressing urgently.

"There is no getting away from the fact that Liverpool are now in a crisis," said Aldridge, writing in the Liverpool Echo. "To lose six out of seven in the league is something the club won't ever tolerate, we can't tolerate that.

"To have picked up just eight points out of 36 since the turn of the year is shambolic - that's relegation form.

"The fact that this is the worst run in the league since 1954 speaks volumes. Questions are being asked and they need to be answered.

"The eyes of the world are on Liverpool and the critics are having a field day. We're becoming a laughing stock.

"We're all proud to be associated with the club and everything it has achieved over the years. But at the moment being a Liverpool fan is just embarrassing and that's something I haven't had to say before."

Aldridge has pointed the finger of blame at the players, who he has called on to show more pride.

He said: "The team just seems to have lost their belief. You can blame the manager and the coaching staff but at the end of the day it comes down to the players.

"They are getting paid unbelievable amounts of money and aren't producing the goods.

"Some of them should take a long hard look in the mirror. They are playing for Liverpool Football Club - one of the biggest clubs in the world - it doesn't get much better than that.

"They need to realise how lucky they are and start doing it or their Anfield careers won't last much longer."

He added: "More than anything I want to see some pride. That's all we're playing for in the league now but there doesn't seem to be much pride around."

Liverpool legend John Barnes does not believe manager Kenny Dalglish is immune from criticism - but expects him to ride through it.

Dalglish is coming under increasing pressure to arrest an alarming slump in form which has seen the Reds lose six of their last seven Premier League matches.

Most supporters have given Anfield legend Dalglish wholehearted backing since he returned to the job for a second spell last year and have been reluctant to criticise the Scot.

But the current poor run - just eight points have been collected in 12 games in 2012 - is testing patience and Barnes is not surprised disquiet is growing.

Barnes, one of the star signings of Dalglish's first stint in charge, told BBC Sport: "We're in the results business and Kenny is no different to anyone else.

"If Sir Alex Ferguson goes through a run of losing games, he's going to be in trouble.

"No matter who you are, it's a results-driven business.

"No-one is immune. There are people talking about it - we have seen it, we have heard it.

"It does happen, but you also have to be realistic in terms of the effect it will have on what you are trying to achieve.

"And the people in the know - how much are they going to support you? Kenny is well supported, so he won't take any notice of that."

Amid the bad results, Liverpool have kept their season alive with their cup performances.

They won the Carling Cup in February and face Everton in the FA Cup semi-finals later this month.

Barnes, 48, said: "In the league they have not been consistent enough - and that is what doing well in the league is all about, being consistent week in, week out.

"Liverpool over the years have been a good cup side but it is disappointing in the league."

The former England winger believes everyone needs to get behind Dalglish to propel the club out of their current turmoil.

He said: "You have to know how to get the results and the people who are going to get the results are the team who shows more support for its manager and its players."

Kenny Dalglish is now the 7/4 favourite in Sky Bet's next Premier League manager to go betting market after Liverpool's 2-0 loss at Newcastle.

The Reds boss had been backed in to 4/1 following the 2-1 defeat to Wigan at Anfield last weekend, but a sixth defeat in seven games has seen his price cut even further.

Sky Bet's Stephen Parkes said: "Things are going for bad to worse at Liverpool and punters have reacted quickly to back Dalglish to leave Anfield.

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish and striker Luis Suarez have urged everyone at the club to stick together and battle through their current slump.

The Reds crashed to a sixth defeat in seven Premier League games at Newcastle on Sunday to remain a disappointing eighth in the table, a place below neighbours Everton.

Despite winning the Carling Cup and having an FA Cup semi-final to come, Dalglish is coming under mounting pressure to arrest a decline that has left his side 16 points off the UEFA Champions League positions.

Dalglish was praised for restoring harmony at Anfield after taking over from Roy Hodgson last year and he is convinced the club have the spirit to revive their flagging fortunes.

The Scot said: "I just think we have got to stick together.

"They (the players) will stick together because they want to get it right, and the best way to do it is to stick together and believe in what they are doing.

"It's up to us to harness the frustration and disappointment properly, work on it and take it as a positive because if they start to enjoy losing games, we'd have a problem."

Liverpool's poor league run actually stretches back to the turn of the year, since when they have collected just eight points in 12 games.

The latest defeat was particularly frustrating as Pepe Reina was sent off for violent conduct and Andy Carroll endured a frustrating return to Newcastle, being booked for diving before reacting angrily to being substituted.

Liverpool had looked the better side before Newcastle opened the scoring and Dalglish was again left to bemoan what might have been.

Dalglish said: "Some of the football we played in the first half was good and exciting and with maybe a bit more luck and/or composure, then we could have been in front.

"The goal we lost, we can learn from, the first one.

"There were lots of times when we created openings, but we have got to take them and we have got to believe in ourselves and believe in what we are doing.

"If we do that, then we will have a better opportunity."

Kenny Dalglish has told reporters that Liverpool's current form is the worst run he has experienced at the club, but insists they can pick themselves up.


Kenny Dalglish is hopeful his players can take all six points from their next two games

Liverpool have one just once in their last seven Premier League games, losing the other six and the run means that only Wolves have scored less points in the 2012 calendar year.

"I do not know if I have experienced a run like this," the 61-year-old Scot told reporters. "I don't remember anything as a manager or a player - or even as a supporter.

"Someone told me for the club it was the worst since 1953. I am not that old and so cannot remember that far back."

Despite the poor form, Dalglish insists the club can pick themselves out of the slump if they believe in their own abilities.

"Everyone is disappointed with the results and understands it is much more enjoyable when you win games," Dalglish added. "I've been disappointed but I've never been down.

"Everyone needs picking up but the best way to pick yourself up is to put in a winning performance. We cannot go about feeling sorry for ourselves.

"For us we just have to work hard and have belief and confidence in our ability because there is bags of ability there."

Despite the indiscipline shown by Pepe Reina and Andy Carroll's tantrum when subbed against Newcastle on the weekend, Dalglish believes both issues have been dealt with.

"Both were frustrated but that was dealt with and done and dusted on Sunday," said Dalglish.

"Anything that had to be done was done there and then so it doesn't fester for anyone.

"I don't know how other people [outside the club] have reacted but we have reacted properly, promptly and correctly."

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has asked the club's fans for patience as the Reds look to return to form following a poor run in the Premier League.


Liverpool have lost six of their last seven matches in the league, resulting in the club slipping to eighth in the table, 16 points adrift of the Champions League places.

The Reds have, however, won the Carling Cup this campaign, while they face rivals Everton at Wembley in the semi-finals of the FA Cup on April 14.

Gerrard accepts Kenny Dalglish's team have been underperforming of late but is hopeful a turnaround is on the horizon as they host Aston Villa this weekend.

"There are a lot of challenges ahead this season. I'd ask the supporters to be patient; we will get it right," Gerrard told the club's official website.

"We have had a mixed March. We're in a league position we're not happy about and we need to look at ourselves and try to move up the league as soon as possible."

The agent of Dirk Kuyt says the Liverpool forward is pondering his playing future.

The Dutchman is being linked with a summer departure from Anfield with the Reds expected to overhaul their squad and the fact that he is not playing regularly could lead the former Feyenoord man to move on, quite possibly to Italian club AS Roma.

"Kuyt is considering his future," his representative Rob Jansen told pagineromaniste.com. "He still has a contract with Liverpool which expires in 2014.

"AS Roma could be an option for Dirk. They are a prestigious club that is fighting for important objectives. With (Roma's sporting director, Walter) Sabatini there is an excellent relationship.
