Vietnamese down 3.8 billion liters of beer in 2016

TUOI TRE NEWS
UPDATED : 01/13/2017 10:43 GMT + 7

Vietnam has cemented its spot among Asia’s top beer consumers, with local drinkers gulping down 3.78 billion liters of the hoppy beverage in 2016.

Statistics released by the Ministry of Industry and Trade show that the average Vietnamese drank 42 liters of beer in 2016, up four liters from 2015.

Though locals are drinking more, the sector’s growth still managed to slow over the past 12 months, with beer production and consumption rising only 9.3 percent year on year – just 85.6 percent of the full-year target.

In January 2016, Vietnam increased the 50 percent special consumption tax on beer by 5 percent, a factor to which ministry attributed the slow growth.

The special consumption tax was again an additional 5 percent at the beginning of 2017 and is expected to reach a whopping 65 percent by January 2018.

Despite the tax burden, Trade Ministry projections still call for Vietnam’s beer production to reach 3.988 billion by the end of 2017, up ten percent year-on-year.

The Ministry also announced production forecasts for 2020 and 2035 at 4.1 billion liters and 5.5 billion liters, respectively.

Ho Chi Minh City-based Sabeco remains the country’s largest brewer, producing 1.6 billion liters of beer in 2016, followed by Heineken Vietnam at 1.1 billion liters.

Vietnam currently houses 129 beer making facilities of all sizes. Of the country’s 63 provinces and cities, only 20 do not have a brewer in their locale.

Despite enormous domestic production, Vietnam still imports over 3 million liters of beer and exports over 70 million liters of the beverage annually.

Cable car proposed for passengers to reach Tan Son Nhat airport

TUOI TRE NEWS
UPDATED : 01/14/2017 07:03 GMT + 7

A cable car developer has proposed building a cable-propelled transit system for passengers to reach Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City, instead of struggling in the usually crowded main streets leading to Vietnam’s busiest airdrome.

The cable car system is proposed to be built in the nearby Hoang Van Thu and Go Vap parks, according to Vu Huy Thang, director or Bilco, the developer behind the cable car systems in several tourist areas such as Vinpearl Nha Trang, Ba Na Hill and Yen Tu.

Thang said he came up with the idea after reading suggestions that a subway system be built to connect the two parks with the airport.

Thang said it would cost around VND500 billion (US$22.32 million) to develop the cable car system, only one tenth of the money needed for the subway.
The Bilco director said construction takes only ten months, and a cable car system is “a quick and effective solution to the congestion problem on the entrance to Tan Son Nhat.”
According to the proposal, the cable car poles will be put on the median strips on Truong Son Street, running from Hoang Van Thu to the airport, so the construction will not occupy the urban space of the area.

At a speed of 25kph, the proposed cable car is capable of carrying 3,000 turns of passengers per hour, and if more advanced technology is deployed, the loading capacity could be up to 4,500 turns, Thang asserted.

Thang added that it would be more convenient to have the cable car put in Hoang Van Thu than in Gia Dinh, as Hong Ha Street, connecting the latter with the airport, does not have median strips.

Both Truong Son and Hong Ha usually suffer congestion during rush hours, so unlucky passengers may miss their flights if they cannot escape from the jam on time.

Several proposals have been made to solve the congestion, inclduing one to develp a $250 million subway from Gia Dinh and Hoang Van Thu parks to the airport.

Another idea is to build a transit station at the parks, where passengers can check-in and send their luggage, before boarding shuttle buses to the departure terminal.

Vietnam outlines strict requirements for locals to gamble at home

UPDATED : 01/14/2017 10:55 GMT + 7

With the Vietnamese government recently revealing that local gamblers will be allowed to enter casinos on home soil in a three-year pilot scheme, a set of strict requirements they have to meet have been outlined in a draft decree.

At a meeting with the administration of the northern province of Quang Ninh in December, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc said the government will pilot allowing local punters to enter casinos in the province’s Van Don District, and Phu Quoc Island off the southern province of Kien Giang.

These two casinos are still under construction, with no opening date confirmed so far, according to newswire VnExpress.

Strict requirements

According to the draft decree, Vietnamese nationals who wish to gamble at those casinos have to meet four requirements at a time.

The punters first have to be at least 21 years of age, and have proof that their minimum monthly income is VND10 million (US$440).

As per the third requirement, local gamblers must afford an entrance fee of VND1 million ($44) per person per day, or VND25 million ($1,100) per person per month.

Lastly, the punters are only allowed to play if there are no official requests from their family members, including their parents, spouses, children, or even parents-in-law, that the casinos should not allow them to play.

Any person who is under legal prosecution or has a criminal record is not allowed to gamble at casinos, according to the bill.

News that Vietnamese will soon be allowed to enter local casinos has been greatly welcomed by some members of the tourism industry.

Professor Ha Ton Vinh, an academic who has extensively researched the gambling industry, said lifting the casino ban on locals will surely drive the economy of Quang Ninh and Kien Giang, where the gambling centers are located.

Vinh also said that every year, the country loses approximately US$800 million in tax return as thousands of Vietnamese have no choice but coming to neighboring countries for gambling.

According to the new regulation, foreign investors who would like to operate a casino in Vietnam are required to invest at least US$2 billion and have ten years of experience in the casino business. Previous requirement asked investors to have at least US$4 billion in capital.

Currently, Vietnam has four licensed casino complexes, including the Nam Hoi An in the central province of Quang Nam and the Ho Tram in the coastal province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau, besides the said venues in Quang Ninh and Phu Quoc.

Two other projects have received in-principle approval, whereas several venues have opened to foreign players for years, including Do Son in Hai Phong City and Aristo Hotel in the northwestern Lao Cai Province.

Vietnamese women among dozens nabbed in Malaysian police raids

TUOI TRE NEWS
UPDATED : 01/15/2017 09:59 GMT + 7

Nearly 50 Vietnamese women were among dozens arrested in a series of raids by Malaysian authorities at four entertainment venues in the southern state of Johor late Friday, local newspaper New Straits Times reported yesterday.

One Vietnamese woman believed to have been a victim of human trafficking was also rescued by Malaysian officers during the raids, the paper said.

Malaysia’s National Revenue Recovery Enforcement Team (NRRET), Johor police and officers from other relevant departments conducted the raids, which lasted from midnight Friday to 9:00 am Saturday, the Malaysian paper cited Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat, chief of the Johor Criminal Investigation Department.

Among those arrested in the first raid were 34 Vietnamese women, 20 Chinese women and two Indonesian women, aged 19 to 34, who were believed to have been working as guest relations officers (GROs), according to Kamarul Zaman.

Also detained were four Nepalese men and two Myanmar nationals, aged 22 to 37, who lacked valid documents, and seven locals who were working as cashiers and security guards, the chief said.

Six out of the seven arrested locals were on the Malaysian police’s list of Wanted Persons, he added.

Ten foreign women, aged 17 to 30, reported to have been forced to work as hostesses, were also rescued during the raid.

In another raid, police captured two men, 13 Vietnamese GROs and one Chinese woman, while rescuing a Vietnamese woman believed to have been a victim of human trafficking.

Among those nabbed in the raids were six Malaysian civil servants, two of whom tested positive for ecstasy, the New Straits Times wrote.

Those arrested will be investigated under Malaysian laws, the paper reported.
