Bro Nono. This will be first time I talk about these beggers in Batam w you. It is an offence to give to beggers in batam. Years ago, there are so many beggers, and they eventually pass a law to ban them.

Some beg when you stop at traffic lights.

some played music with a guitar or sing and later go around begging while you are eating in a restaurant. ( their singing is terrible, some rather ok)

Some just simply walked up to you to beg.

Nowdays, you see some selling newspapers, that's not an offence. Some sell their flags when it is near their national day, or some sold bottles of waters when the traffic lights are red.

Normally, I don't give to them, but there are a few whom I would give. Perhaps, you seen them before too. There is one guy with no limbs, walk with his hands, another with no both hands. He put a pail near to his shoulder and he walks around Nagoya Hills Mall area. He been around close to 20 over years. 1K rupiah, and that's all. Heard that he had 7 or 8 wives to support. But he is supporting many others too.

The kids asking at traffic lights? Don't give. They are controlled by syndicates. Orphans? there are. but usually there are schools or masjit that takes them in, teach them proper and educate them. I donate to them. Not every tom dick temple I give. Only those who I trust.

As it is, charity comes from the heart. But we have to open our eyes whom we are donating to. You see those who run charity/orphanage? see how the kids are being raised. See what events they do, to help others, before opening your purse. Don't do blindly, n when you see scandals at those whom you donated, it breaks your heart.

December is super peak. Crowded. Do plan and execute ahead. Last week of december (after Christmas to 2016), quite a few shops tend to be closed (owners being Christians). Christmas is considered a major holiday in Batam.

A recommendation the next time you try (and if available) - ask Denny to pick out "fat" flower crabs and steam it . Another dish (if available) - fresh cockles - the size close to a golf ball - cooked in soy sauce-whatever-he-called-it-I-dunno LOL! And another : Sotong sambal petai ! Another : fish steamboat !

My absolute favorite is still his kerapu stim hongkong la.. He gets the fish timing right EVERY SINGLE TIME, and his garlic soy sauce is to die for.. Slurpsss..

Can ah. Anytime from now til 2nd week December.

Just got back from both Marine Live and Kez.

Expect 3rd+4th Week December to be crowded. Meaning Denny (Marine Live) will be too busy to add his personal touch to our cuisine.

Kez's also booked heavily. At present 11 bookings and counting - all overseas couples and families. Chef Denny not able to prepare off-menu special dinner from now til after Christmas. I missed the chance to pre-book Miyazaki beef Grade 9. Those 7 (out of 11) bookings got it.

One of the reason why I picked Formosa Hotel to make the Beginner's Guide for 1st Time Batam Visitor is becos it has been recommended since the beginning of this thread for NEWBIES. The senior bros in thread cant go very wrong with as it was documented base on good reviews since about 7 years ago,hehehe...and moreover,it has everything all under one roof. To me,its step number 1 to Batam. One cannot go very wrong if they reads and understand.

The food guide however was made recently,i combined and try to restructured all the food places post that was visited by bros in this thread known to me. There are still room for improvement tho and i am still working on it to make it better.

Few Spas has closed down,like Trinity Spa and Newton Spa etc. So if one were to skip Delta Spa,you may end up with just Octopus Spa at Pacific Palace Hotel 8th floor or Altalanta Spa opposite Novetel Hotel .Nowaday I always aim for a Spa places that has the least business tho,hehehe...and turn it to a playground that suits me. Sort of like changing the environment to suit me to take out the competitions,hehehe…

Nowaday i am looking into those 1st tier spa places like Spa Secret ,Spa Villa etc and try to turn them "dirty". But definitely will not be Spa Secret or any of those spa nearby to Nagoya Hill Mall area. Like i say,i look further...especially those that has lesser business to help me increase my bargaining chips,hehehe...

My aim was to get my own definition of Batam's BEST for least.

By the way,I still have a lot more to learn in Batam.

Actually,grab any taxi also can but must always ASK price properly beforhand,then bargain down. Dont be shy,they expected you to bargain down but if you don’t do that,then they know they are in for a Good Day and you may be in for a bad one.

If you are visiting Batam alone,try out ojek. Ojek is a motor bike taxi that every Batam visitor should at least try,hehehe...day time for short distance and during off peak hours shouldn’t have any safety issues. (counting base on accidents that happen during sunset time and/or day time during peak hours)

Procedue of my Kaha booking

During weekdays (Mon-Thu) you can just go straight. 90% time will have room but on the safe side,better to email Formosa Hotel main website to reserve a room 1st.Reason is sometime there might be sudden major events or public holidays in Batam that will not be known in Sillypore.

On a weekend (Fri-Sun),better if you could :

1. Email Formosa Hotel on the date you are coming and the type of room you want with you name about a 3 to 4 days in advance and your length of stay.

2. Upon their reply,note down the person who reserve the room for you. It is usually the receptionist who will reply you.

3. On that day of your arrival,head to Kaha at opposite Harmoni Hotel,the one with Batam's only Mcdonald restaurant as their neighbour. (not Harmoni One or Harmoni Suite hotel)

4. Walk in to Kaha travel and tells the counter staffs that you want to book a room from Formosa and that you already reserved a room there by Mr/Miss (the name who replied your email) for <your name>.

5. Pay up using cash to them and you will be issue a hotel voucher. You can pay by credit card too but there will be surcharge.

6. You can now proceed to Formosa Hotel,hand the voucher and your passport to the hotel receptionist and you will be ready to check in.

7. They will safe-keep your passport for you until you check out on your last day .

Always check and compare price with online hotel booking versus Kaha becos Kaha is not always cheaper. They can be more expensive during off peak season as online booking will price themselves cheaper during low season. It takes no more than 15 mins to check booking.com and agoda for hotel pricing. Booking.com are tax inclusive whereas agoda isnt. So you will need to add a +10% and + 11% for agoda pricing.

Your likely next question,what if you wish to book other hotels instead of Formosa?

My answer,you will have to find out yourself when your 1st/2nd visit to Kaha to book a room for Formosa hotel. The reason i am not answering is everyone uses a different method and there are others who got piss off trying to find out. Their website dont show the price of hotels and prices do change at an average rate of once per year w/o prior notice.

My method,i check with the counter staffs at Kaha Travel when i am in Batam. But i dont always get the right answers and the staffs can get really piss off if i ask too much questions too.

Clue : Customer is not always right in Batam and avoid bringing that mentality there.

I cannot even imagine Batam without Formosa. For me, Batam IS Formosa. In my mind, I associated all my adventures I had in Batam to the smell of Formosa floors, to the smile of all Receptionists, to the large triple-size bed (yes, enough to keep 3 persons sleeping with ease).
