Overseas withdrawl: Thailand

Hello,
I've been visiting BKK, everytime i spend about $30SGD ($5 SGD per transation) on ATM withdrawls. Are there any other ways that waives such ATM transation fees in foreign countries? I have a UOB account in Singapore, but have never tried withdrawling from a UOB thai ATM before, i wonder if it would be free or cheaper.

I tried opening a bank of bangkok, but they require me to produce work permit which i don't have. So my next trip up i might be opening K bank as i heard no need to produce work permit. Thats my last resort and i'm not sure if it works or not.

Brothers please advice.. how do you withdraw $$ in thailand?

Re: Overseas withdrawl: Thailand

SoloHavok,

Use credit card for purchases in shopping center. This way no transaction fees but difference in exchange rate when you pay your bill in Singapore.

The other way is to withdraw larger amount at one go and minimise number of transactions.

No credit card then go to POSB get debit card, works just as well as credit card and can also withdraw cash with plus atm.

Personally, I carry hard cash (Sing dollar or US dollar) and keep them in the safe deposit box. Everyday just take out enough to spend, leave the rest in the safe until wallet empty. This way my money is safe even if I bring the girls to the room. No worry they steal my cash.

I have an account with Bank of Bangkok which I opened at Silom Rd, no need to produce any work permit. Just bring money to deposit, passport and provide local mailing address.

Hi SKP2007,

It's safe to keep money in hotel safe deposit box. In fact you should keep your other valuable there as passport, airline ticket, spare cash, spare camera, condoms, breakfast coupons, GF's photo (if any), etc.

Lagi best if the safe deposit box is at the reception counter, then everyday can hello-hello to pretty receptionist.

UOB Sillypore and UOB Thailand are different legal entities, even when they carry the same name. As long as it's cross border, they are different legal entities, the banks can charge transaction / service fees.

But sometimes or some banks may waive these charges, up to the discretion of the banks. It may be for some promotions, u are a valued customer, or for whatever reasons.

Several years ago, I remember UOB dont charge me those service fees unless I make 3 more than withdrawals in a week or something like that, can't remember very clearly.

U are lucky oredi. In China, most banks charge these service fees if u are making withdrawals from a different city u opened the bank account! Some banks do waive these charges for some privileged customers, ie. customers with deposits / investments / assets exceeding some amounts.

It has always been the case where transaction fees have to be deducted. If UOB waives such fees, please tell me. I immediately go and close my account, because if the bank can waive off fees, then the bank will be losing money from people who suka suka withdraw any amount at will.

There is another way, tell the bank manager you want to buy a condo and you will be transferring funds over in order to make the purchase. Of course, you have to bank in a big amount to 'prove your words'. If like 10-20K baht, don't think they will believe. A 6-figure amount will sound more decent.

Brothers please advice.. how do you withdraw $$ in thailand?[/QUOTE]
I bring cash. Sign card. Not enough, draw from ATM. But I one time draw will draw max. Because whether draw 5000baht or 20K baht, still have to pay $5/-
