NKF CEO sacked over ‘personal indiscretion' involving male staff member
By Justin Ong
Posted 16 Nov 2016 19:01 Updated 16 Nov 2016 19:13 SINGAPORE: The National Kidney Foundation (NKF) terminated chief executive officer Edmund Kwok over a "personal indiscretion" involving a male staff member, said the organisation’s chairman Koh Poh Tiong on Wednesday evening (Nov 16). Speaking at a press conference held hours after NKF first announced Mr Kwok’s dismissal in the morning, Mr Koh added that the “seriousness” of the incident led to the organisation making a police report on Tuesday. NKF’s initial statement said Mr Kwok’s indiscretion had nothing to do with the stewardship of its finances. “I just want to say that as far as the board of NKF is concerned, we acted immediately," Mr Koh said. "We’ve gone through the full process; we agreed there will be no cover-up and that we must look after the interest of our 4,000 patients. We want to be upfront with all our stakeholders … I’m very pleased the board was unanimous in its decision and moved very swiftly.” According to Mr Koh, the case first came to light last Monday when the male staff in question complained to his supervisor, who then brought it up to the human resources department. A report was then made to Mr Koh on Wednesday, who then held a board meeting on Friday. “We deliberated on it and took legal advice,” said Mr Koh. “I had a discussion with the CEO (Mr Kwok) the same night and he admitted to it.” The board then formed a disciplinary committee which spoke to Mr Kwok on Sunday before recommending that he be terminated. Said Mr Koh: “The board agreed on Sunday night itself, and on Monday morning I informed Edmund about his termination.” “EDMUND IS A VERY GOOD CEO” NKF said a three-member executive committee appointed by the board will assume Mr Kwok's duties and responsibilities until mid-December - when former CEO Eunice Tay returns to take over – but in the meantime, the search for a new CEO will go on. “Our operations are not affected by this matter and our services to patients and beneficiaries continue as per normal,” said NKF. Mr William Wan, who chaired the disciplinary committee, said the board acted in the best interests of NKF. “It’s not about one man, it’s about 4,000 patients and many more … We want this organisation to not be affected by one man’s misconduct so we did what was needed,” he stated. continue reading here : http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/...f/3293968.html

Ex-NKF chief Edmund Kwok's case 'an abuse of power'
Published 10 hours ago Sources also reveal colleague involved felt he couldn't say no, and it was first time such an encounter had occurred Ng Huiwen Janice Tai Samantha Boh The incident which led to the sacking of former National Kidney Foundation (NKF) chief executive officer Edmund Kwok was an abuse of power, a source close to the case has said. An act of a sexual nature allegedly took place on Nov 7. Mr Kwok, 58, approached a colleague in his early 20s, separate sources told The Straits Times. It was the first time such an encounter had happened between both men, sources said. It took the employee one day to inform his supervisor in NKF. NOT PUT OFF FROM GIVING The patients still need our help. Plus, there is assurance that money was not misused. As long as it goes towards helping patients, I will continue to donate. HOUSEWIFE JENNY WONG The colleague later told his supervisor that he felt he could not say no to Mr Kwok, and that he felt powerless to stop the act, said two well-placed sources. "It was a clear abuse of power," said one of them. The younger man involved in the incident also said he did not want to escalate the matter, such as by making a police report, according to sources. He is still working for the NKF, which decided to lodge a police report. It did so after questioning Mr Kwok. The NKF, during a press conference on Wednesday, said Mr Kwok had admitted, on two separate occasions, that the alleged incident took place. The first was last Friday, when he was questioned by NKF chairman Koh Poh Tiong. During a disciplinary hearing on Sunday, he again said that it happened. The organisation's lawyers advised Mr Koh that what took place was a "reportable offence". On Monday, Mr Kwok was sacked by the NKF for the "personal indiscretion". On Tuesday, the charity made a police report. Police investigations would have kicked in, based on the report made by the NKF, said criminal lawyer Amolat Singh. The next step is to get a statement from the alleged victim. The Straits Times understands from various sources that the employee who complained has yet to give a police statement. Another criminal lawyer, Mr Shashi Nathan, said that the police would need to gather sufficient information at this stage to determine if a crime has been committed, including taking statements from the accused and other witnesses. continue reading here : http://www.straitstimes.com/singapor...abuse-of-power
