Seoul: North Korea has successfully test-fired a newly developed underwater ballistic missile which it describes as a "world level strategic weapon", the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on Saturday.

Leader Kim Jong-Un gave the order to test-fire the missile and watched as it was launched from an attack submarine, the news agency said.

"There took place an underwater test-fire of Korean-style powerful strategic submarine ballistic missile," KCNA said.

"The ballistic missile was developed on the personal initiative of Supreme Commander of the Korean People's Army Kim Jong-Un."

It described the weapon as meeting the latest military science and technology requirements, calling the test an "eye-opening success" on par with a satellite launch.

"The acquisition of the technology... made it possible for the KPA (Korean People's Army) to possess a world-level strategic weapon capable of striking and wiping out in any waters the hostile forces infringing upon the sovereignty and dignity of Songun Korea and conduct any underwater operation," it said.

It came after Pyongyang on Friday slammed US allegations that its space research is essentially a disguised ballistic missile programme, and vowed to send more satellites into orbit in defiance of UN sanctions.

There is little doubt that North Korea has an active ballistic missile development programme, but expert opinion has been split on just how much progress it has made.

VE Day: Vladimir Putin thanks WWII allies at Moscow parade despite Western boycott

Russia has staged its largest military parade since the break-up of the Soviet Union to commemorate the 70th anniversary of victory over Nazi Germany in World War II.

Around 16,000 troops took part in the parade on Red Square that also showcased cutting-edge weapons, such as the next-generation Armata T-14 tank, in one of the biggest Victory Day celebrations in decades.

President Vladimir Putin thanked Russia's key WWII allies — the United States, Britain and France — at the huge parade amid a Western boycott.

In what is seen as punishment for Kremlin meddling in Ukraine, Russia's World War II allies boycotted the festivities, leaving Mr Putin to mark the day in the company of the leaders of China, Cuba and Venezuela.

"Our fathers and grandfathers went through unbearable suffering, deprivation and losses," Mr Putin said at the beginning of the parade, feting the country's veterans and the "grandeur of victory over Nazism".

"We are grateful to the people of Great Britain, France and the United States for their contribution to victory."

He also thanked those who fought against the Nazis in other countries, including Germany.

Several hours after the main parade, Mr Putin unexpectedly joined the head of a 250,000-strong commemorative march on Red Square, clutching a portrait of his father who fought in the war.

"I think that my father, just like millions of simple soldiers — and he was a plain soldier — had every right to walk through this square," he said, briefly leading the vast crowd in the Kremlin-backed event dubbed the "Immortal Regiment".

He said the Immortal Regiment was a tribute to the country's fallen soldiers and civilians but was also a sign of Russia's strength.

"It also speaks of our self-confidence, confidence in our strength and the happy future for our children," he said.

United States president Barack Obama snubbed the festivities, as did the leaders of WWII allies Britain and France.

German chancellor Angela Merkel ducked out of attending the parade but will fly to Moscow on Sunday to lay a wreath at the grave of the unknown soldier and meet with Mr Putin.

Chinese leader Xi Jinping took Mr Putin's side at the ceremony, and Indian president Pranab Mukherjee was also in attendance.

Egyptian president Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, Raul Castro of Cuba, Nicolas Maduro of Venezuela, Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe and Jacob Zuma of South Africa also attended.

Thousands of troops, including Chinese honour guards, as well as troops from Mongolia, Serbia and several ex-Soviet states marched past the leaders.

In a finely choreographed parade, troops including soldiers sporting Soviet-era uniforms and rifles and a cavalry regiment marched across Red Square's famed cobbles as Mr Putin and Mr Xi looked on.

The 70th anniversary celebrations stand in contrast to the festivities a decade ago, when Mr Putin hosted the leaders of the United States, France, Germany, Italy and Japan.

The Soviet Union lost an estimated 27 million soldiers and civilians in WWII — more than any other country — and the Red Army's triumph remains an enormous source of national pride.

Moscow, May 9 (EFE).- Moscow celebrated Saturday its victory over Nazi Germany in World War II with the largest military parade in its history and with thousands of people pouring into the streets, in an atmosphere of patriotism at a time of tense relations with the West, whose leaders avoided the festivities.

More than 16,000 soldiers and some 200 pieces of the latest Russian heavy arms like tanks and missiles paraded through Red Square, while more than 100 combat aircraft and helicopters flew overhead, leaving in their wake the three colors of the Russian flag.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, who saw how leaders of the European Union and the United States stayed away from Moscow on this 70th anniversary of the allied victory in retribution for Russia's support of eastern Ukrainian separatists, was surrounded, on the other hand, by leaders of friendly nations.

The head of the Kremlin appeared on a platform mounted on Lenin's Tomb with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarayev, as well as with Raul Castro from Cuba, Venezuela's Nicolas Maduro and leaders of countries like India, South Africa, Egypt and Palestine, as well as by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon.

Though Russia considers it was the Soviet people and the Red Army that finally halted the Nazi advance while paying the terrible price of 27 million lives, Putin thanked the allied coalition - "Britain, France and the United States" - for contributing to the victory over Nazi Germany. EFE
