Teenager cleared of rape and murder charge, 18 years after China executed him Posted on 16 December 2014 | 13,173 views | 20 comments This article was contributed by the Stomp Team. Inner Mongolia Higher People’s Court declared Huugjilt, who was 18 when he was wrongfully accused of rape and murder and then executed in 1996, innocent after a retrial this year. According to South China Morning Post, Huugjilt was found guilty of raping and murdering a woman in a public toilet in Hohhot, the capital of Mongolia in 1996, and 2 months after being sentenced to death, he was executed. Years later, a serial rapist and murderer, Zhao Zhihong, was arrested in 2005 and confessed to the rape and murder of the woman in 1996. Hefeng, the director of the Public Secruity Bureau in Inner Mongolia, checked Huugjilt’s case file, reports China Radio International. He said: “The prosecutor asked Huugjilt why he confessed at the police station. “According to the record, Huugjilt said that the police didn’t allow him to drink, go to the toilet, or have meals. “They told him the victim was still alive, and named him as the murderer. “They also told him that he could go home once he confessed.” The retrial was held only in November. The court directly addressed Huugjilt’s parents in delivering the verdict. “Entrusted by Hu Yifeng, the head of the higher court and on behalf of the court, I would like to express our profound apology to you. Sorry.” His parents were also presented with 30,000 yuan (S$6,350) as an expression of “sympathy”. Huugjilt’s parents visited his grave to burn copies of the retrial verdict yesterday (Dec 15).
