Python spotted in drain at Braddell Road

SINGAPORE: A python was spotted in one of the drains outside the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) Academy at Braddell Road on Friday (Sep 26).

According to Mr Kumar, a security guard at BCA Academy, a member of public first saw the snake at around 7.40am. The snake was "approximately 3.5m and between 18 and 20kg", he said.

Mr Kumar then informed one of the staff at BCA, before the estate management notified the relevant authorities.

Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (ACRES) said they were notified about the python at 8am. When the rescue team arrived, they saw that the python was stuck in the metal grill drain cover outside BCA.

"The python had attempted to squeeze through a metal grill covering a drain when the back half of its body got stuck," ACRES told Channel NewsAsia.

After the team freed the python, it proceeded into the drain that led to a large canal, it added.

Last month, another python was spotted hanging on a fence near a bus stop in Braddell.

PYTHONS PLAY IMPORTANT ECOLOGICAL ROLE

"Reticulated pythons are one of the most common native species of snakes that predominately feed on rats," said ACRES. "They play an important ecological role in controlling our rodent population." They are active at night and rest in hiding during the day, it added.

ACRES also advised the public that if they encounter any wildlife in distress, they should not approach or attempt to handle them on their own. Instead, the public are to call its 24-hour wildlife rescue hotline at 9783 7782 for further assistance. - CNA/kk/ek
