Restaurant manager Susukida Ryuji, 53, was fined $4,500 for negligently causing grievous hurt to Wan Zahfirah Ashad, 25.

Ryuji, a Japanese National, had left a bottle of leaking concentrated dishwashing detergent on the MRT seat beside him. The acidic liquid had spilt all over the seat beside him but he left without cleaning it up or notifying authorities.

Shortly after, Ms Wan Zahfirah, sat on the seat unknowingly but felt a sharp pain on her left buttock. She touched her pants and realised they were damp. Then, her finger started to burn so she alighted and took a cab home.

When she inspected the problem at home, she found that the corrosive liquid had soaked through three layers of clothes and had severely burned her buttocks, causing her undergarments to stick to her skin. Her skin has also peeled off and stuck to her clothes.

She had to be taken to hospital and was warded at Singapore General Hospital for over 4 months until September 20. She had suffered severe burns on a total of 3% of her body surface. Her treatment required a skin graph and she is still attending follow-up visits to a plastic surgery specialist clinic.

Following the incident, which happened in May 2nd last year, SMRT lodged a police report and investigations revealed that Ryuji, the general manager of the Men-ya Kaiko restaurant chain was the one that had left the substance behind. Ryuji had boarded at Marina Bay MRT Station and alighted at Orchard. Ms Zahfirah boarded the train at Woodlands, headed toward Jurong East.

The maximum penalty for Ryuji's act of negligence causing danger to others is 2 years jail and a $5,000 fine.
