New Drug causes HIV to mutate itself to death !

University of Minnesota researchers have identified two FDA approved drugs that may fight HIV. "HIV's ability to mutate makes it difficult to target and treat," said molecular virologist Louis Mansky. "We wanted to take advantage of this behaviour by stimulating HIV's mutation rate, essentially using the virus as a weapon against itself," Mansky added.

The two drugs, decitabine and gemcitabine - both FDA approved and currently used in pre-cancer and cancer therapy - were found to eliminate HIV infection in the mouse model by causing the virus to mutate itself to death - an outcome researchers dubbed "lethal mutagenesis."

Mansky and colleague Christine Clouser found that the drug concentrations needed to eliminate HIV infection cause no measurable cell toxicity and were effective against HIV cultures at concentrations well below the current levels used for cancer treatment.

Gemcitabine and decitabine have been administered in pre-clinical trials with mice.

Initial findings confirm that the drugs are an effective antiviral therapy for HIV.

The researchers are now in the process of modifying the drugs to forms that can be absorbed by the human body when taken orally.

The findings were recently published online in the Journal of Virology.

But still, would be interesting to find out which company is gonna market the products.

but if humans were to feel this way.. always knowing that there's a cure for HIV , they will always come out with even more weirder things to try =/ .. that's when there's an evolve in virus as well..

hmm, if i recall correctly, i do hear articles repeating 10 yrs and 10 yrs away from cure since 1990s? 20 years on, still no cure...

you are right snbd bro.
only 1% of drugs make it from pre-clinical trials to human trials.
its very costly and takes a long time. something like 10 years.
dun want to be a wet blanket but thats the facts.

actually with the HIV meds we have right now we can control HIV and give patients a near normal life span. just like diabetes or high blood pressure, there is no cure but can be controlled.

2 more promising things:
1. recent thailand vaccine trial showed 33% effectiveness
2. new gel that prevent HIV transmission. this one is interesting. imagine just put this gel all over ur didi before bonking and confirm cannot get HIV. shiok.

yes bro. u r rite.

cos in africa a lot of guy with hiv want to do raw and the ger no choice but do raw with them. so this gel is for the ger to use to protect herself.

but in our context we get the ger to use then the chance of her passing hiv to us also reduce mah. added benefit of making more slippery also
