Bangkok to have nine new public parks by 2009 Bangkok is to have more green areas, with nine new public parks opening by 2009, Governor Apirak Kosayodhin said. Most of the parks, totalling 391 rai, will be situated in the suburbs since inner city areas are occupied, he said. Apart from a four-rai park by the Chao Phraya river in Tha Tian and an 11-rai park in Soi Mor Leng in Ratchathewi district, the others are in the suburban districts of Lat Krabang, Prawet, Bang Khunthian, Thawi-Watthana, Bung Kum, Huai Khwang and Lat Phrao. After the new parks open, the city will have 11,391 rai of green areas, or 3.19 sq m per person, up from 2.4 sq m a person two years ago. Mr Apirak said the city aims to turn vacant space under elevated train tracks and bus stops into mini-green areas. He said in the inner city, areas along pillars of the skytrain tracks and expressways, and areas near bus stops are prime targets. According Mr Apirak, a special committee consisting of representatives from State Railways of Thailand and the Expressway and Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand, will be set up to draft a master plan to boost the city's green areas. --- KatoeyNewsNetwork

Boonrawd: Attacks in Bangkok possible Defence Minister Boonrawd Somtas warned Thursday that Muslim insurgents from the deep South might expand their attacks to Bangkok. Gen Boonrawd said the ministry discovered that insurgents were wandering around universities in the capital. "It is possible that the insurgents will expand their attacks to Bangkok, because we have learned of their movements in various universities where they conceal themselves in uniforms of students," he said, adding that it was difficult for authorities to differentiate between the separatists and innocent people 100 per cent. The Special Branch police unit had earlier said it was closely monitoring Muslim student groups in Bangkok. Gen Boonrawd added that curfew might be imposed in the southernmost provinces if necessary. However, he said the decision had to be done carefully as this might have an impact on the economics and credibility of the country. Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont on Thursday pledged that the government would attempt to the utmost to prevent insurgent violence now commonplace in the deep South from spilling over into the Bangkok metropolis. Speaking at the "Prime Minister Meets the Press" programme at Government House, he conceded that the Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC) is concerned about the possible spillover of the southern violence into the capital. However, the government would try its best to end the southern unrest as soon as possible and to curb any spread into the metropolitan area. Meanwhile, Bangkok Governor Apirak Kosayodhin told the Bangkokians not to panick following Gen Boonrawd's remarks because there was no official confirmation that insurgents would stage violent activities in the capital. Mr Apirak added that security in Bangkok have already been stepped up. As a premptive measure, the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) and Bangkok Metro have also sought public cooperation to have purses, parcels and other carry-on baggage examined before entering an electric train station. To step up security measures, both organisations in a joint statement asked for cooperation and understanding from passengers to allow security staff to check their packages and other belongings to prevent possible bombings on trains. Such action is taken in line with the international standard security practice to ensure all passengers get maximum safety protection abroad Bangkok trains. Passengers have been also asked not to seal their packages tightly so that security staff could open them conveniently. Both organisations said they reserved the right to not provide service to passengers not cooperating with the measures. They also suspended staircase and elevator services temporarily to ensure that all passengers walk through checkpoints. In an attempt to brace for possible insurgent attacks, the Transport Ministry had recently instructed state agencies responsible for public transport nationwide to step up security measures at all transport stations. --- KatoeyNewsNetwork

Skytrain extension project progressing on schedule The Skytrain extension from Saphan Taksin across the river to Taksin Intersection and the first Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) route, from Chong Nonsi to Rajaphruek, will both be ready to serve the public early next year. Planned projects for mass transit systems will cost the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) over Bt20 billion. That sum includes Bt8.76 billion for the 5.25km extension from On Nut to Sukhumvit 107; Bt9.46 billion for the 6.7km extension from Saphan Taksin to Bang Wa; and Bt2.18 billion for the 16.5km Chong Nonsi BRT route. Work on the Chong Nonsi bus link, to be undertaken by Unique Engineering & Construction Co, is due to start on March 1 and will take six to seven months to complete. Four more express bus (BRT) routes are also in the pipeline: * 38-km link from Don Muang to Min Buri and Suvarnabhumi, to be built later this year. It will cost Bt4.53 billion; * An 18.7-km route from Mor Chit to Pak Kred, which will cost Bt1.12 billion; * 25-km route from Min Buri to Sri Nakharin and Sukhumvit 107, which will cost Bt3.12 billion; * And a 15.6-km route from Bang Na to Suvarnabhumi, which will cost Bt1.93 billion. The five BRT routes will cover just over 98 kilometres and cost nearly Bt13 billion. Bangkok Governor Apirak Kosayodhin led a press tour along the first BRT route on Wednesday. He said: "If all five BRT routes are completed they will link with the Skytrain and subway lines covering the inner city to important places in suburban areas. They will make travelling around the city quicker and more convenient and help reduce traffic jams." Deputy city governor Panit Wikitset said the 2.2-km extension from Saphan Taksin to Taksin Intersection was 90 per cent done and should be completed by April. The system will be tested for six months before opening for service. A further 4.5-km stretch from Taksin Intersection to Bang Wa should be completed in late 2009, while the On Nut-Sukhumvit 107 extension would open for service in early 2009, he said. Besides the two Skytrain extensions, the city had also received full funding from the government to build two other Skytrain extensions: a 14-km link from Sukhumvit 107 to Samut Prakan (costing Bt14.9 billion) and a 13-km route from Mor Chit to Saphan Mai (costing Bt14.74 billion), Panit said. --- KatoeyNewsNetwork

Me back again from walkabout....to Sukhumvit Road 33 looking for "Akane" Massage centre.... Aligned at Sukhumvit MRT and walked from 23 to 33 (abt 5 streets)....this whole stretch of 33, most of them is Massage parlour....but once you pass by they will greet you with "xxxxxxxxxx" (Greeting in Japanese), does i look like JAPANESE ?.....
