Having been here for about 3 years, i must say the xenophobia is really quite extreme. I am not sure what goes into their educational curriculum but its got to change. This mindset of "looking inwards" is certainly not aiding an already sputtering economy.

If you look around non-touristy places in Osaka, Kyoto, Tokyo, Nagoya, Fukuoka, Yokohama, you definitely will not be able to venture far as a foreigner. (white/black inclusive). Just last month, while out with a white female friend of mine from Austria, we were shoo-ed away by a "reputable" japanese restaurant as recommended in the Michelin Guide. This in Tokyo, mind you. And i speak fairly decent nihongo. However, the thought of serving an authentic omakase (chef's choice) meal to 2 foreigners (both looking non-japanese, i am eurasian) certainly irked the chef's assistant enough.

If you look at the dating scene here, good luck to you if you are even remotely asian and don't speak fluent Japanese. You can be the smoothest guy in the world, decked in your finest, but most locals (outside of those visiting Jap-Americans/Eurasians) will not even offer you a single window of opportunity after your first sentence. You get the typical cutesy "gomen nasai" or "sumimasen" and then your chances get snuffed out as quick as a fire. It may be challenging to some PUA brothers here, but it gets tiring very quickly as you are always bending backwards to get girls and that is indeed a sign of desperation.

P4P, needless to say more, helluva varieties (some very sick), but very expensive and exclusive. You need at least a decent, working level knowledge of Japanese to monger and get past the pimps/counter assistant. Why bother again?? I really wonder sometimes.
