Re: DSC Scary Result...

To AFA volunteers

What is the difference between HIV full test and HIV Anonymous test.
What is the accuracy between both test whereas result for full test take much longer but the anonymous test take just 10-20 min.

Went to take the A test few days ago and result is negative but was wondering how accurate is the test just by a drop of blood on the test-strip as my friend advised me to go for full test at the private clinic to be safe .

Pls advise

Re: DSC Scary Result...

HIV anon test does not take down your name, NRIC or any other personal particulars. you are just known by your number. http://www.afa.org.sg

the accuracy for HIV rapid test is abt 97%.
most impt is to observe the window period for accuracy.
you can go for a test at a pte clinic if it makes you happier. but clinic will take down your name and nric no.

Re: DSC Scary Result...

Hey guys, I last chiong about 11 months ago. I have done with many FLs, about 30+ i recalled over a period of almost 2 years. All of them are done with protection, though I remembered twice when I pulled out, the condom was stuck in the FL. Though I did have BBBJs by some of the WL.

So far there are no symptoms on me, but I feel a bit guilty and worried sometimes when I think about the high risk I put myself in. I want to stop chionging and concentrate on other more important things such as family and gf.

Kind Bros, pls advise. Should I go for a check? If I do, where and how do I go about it. Want the most accurate but yet do not want to be identified. Thanks.

I believe brother AfA_hmor has already given you half of your answer. As to whether or not to go for it, only you can decide for yourself. My suggestion if you really need peace of mind go, if not why bother.

You've past the window period, you don't have to worry so much about accuracy. If you want to put your heart and mind at ease, you can go to the AfA anonymous test site.
AfA's website has all the information, plus a step-by-step of how the whole process goes. www.afa.org.sg

Re: DSC Scary Result...

It is said that tests are sensitive enough to detect HIV antibodies after 30 days instead of 3 months from the time of sexual contact. So can I be tested 30 days later. My last contact was on 29 Nov.

New high for HIV cases ?

Report from Today newspaper dated Saturday 1 December 2007 :-

New high for HIV cases ? - Only 5% of infected heterosexuals detected via voluntary testing

WITH 356 newly-detected cases of HIV reported here between January and October, this year's final total is on track to surpass last year's figure of 357 — and set a new high.
.
But what is perhaps more worrying is the number of unreported cases among heterosexuals, who seem less likely to go for voluntary HIV testing.
.
Of 164 Singaporeans found to be infected with HIV in the first half of the year, heterosexual transmission accounted for 67 per cent, according to figures released by the Ministry of Health (MOH) on Friday. Only 5 per cent of them were detected via voluntary screening — the rest were detected in the course of some form of medical care or contact tracing.
.
Among homosexuals diagnosed with HIV, 31 per cent of cases were found through voluntary screening. Homosexual transmission accounted for 24 per cent of new HIV cases between January and June.
.
The scenario was similar last year. Three per cent of new HIV-infected heterosexuals were detected through voluntary testing, compared with 35 per cent of homosexuals.
.
Action for Aids (AFA) president Roy Chan said public education has "yielded results for the homosexual community", but the heterosexual community is not as receptive as "they may not understand fully the risks involved".
.
An MOH spokesperson said the findings "underscore the urgent need for the HIV testing message to take root in the heterosexual community".
.
Those engaging in risky behaviours are urged to go for regular HIV testing as "early diagnosis and treatment can significantly delay the onset of Aids and reduce the risk of death", said the spokes-person.
.
Indeed, as the statistics show, 55 per cent of cases of those detected with HIV were already in the late stage of infection.
.
To facilitate early and regular testing, MOH has allowed medical clinics to offer HIV testing using oral-fluid or blood-based rapid HIV test kits since August. These rapid HIV tests can produce results in about 20 minutes. Nearly 100 clinics offer such services now.
.
Dr Tan Sze Wee, Rockeby biomed CEO, which supplies the rapid HIV test kits, said response has been "quite positive". The company sells an average of 500 sets a month to 55 clinics. He expects the volume to increase this month, with more Aids awareness activities now.
.
Perhaps, if the Food and Drug Administration in the United States approves of over-the-counter sale of HIV tests kits in 2009, MOH may consider selling the kits outside of clinics, he added. But Dr Tan noted that changes to the kit have to be made first, such as changing the instructions and introducing pre- and post-test counselling currently conducted by clinics.
.
To step up detection of HIV, Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan had earlier announced that all men admitted to hospital would be asked to take a voluntary Aids test.
.
Of all the new cases reported in the first six months, only 12 per cent were diagnosed as a result of voluntary HIV screening. On the other hand, 76 per cent of new HIV cases were detected through HIV testing during some form of medical care.

30 days is just for a baseline check. Take this Bro AFA_hmor advise, if you've tested negative at 4th week. The chances are that you will remain negative. Only a small percentage of people can't detect at 4th week, but because its still a signifant no. at 5%, we can't simply say 4 weeks is enough. Have to wait till 3rd month after exposure then can confirm.

That small percentage is for people who have weak immune system but those with a good immune system may subpress the virus and might also cause the test to be -ve but rest assure that this is only happen in a small percentage of ppl. SO a test after 3 months is still needed from possible exposure.

Re: DSC Scary Result...

Hi bros, I went for the anonymous test a few days ago, relieved that I tested negative. It has been an anxious wait ever since I justified myself to be tested up till the time I knew my results.
Guys, chiong safely, even though the counsellor told me my situation was very low risk but I was still damn worried. Now I feel like I'm born again. Just a tip guys, whenever you feel like chionging, why don't you call someone you love immediately so that they can distract you from chionging at all. Thanks for the assistance bros.

You can schedule yourself for a New Year HIV test.
Let's start 2008 with a -ve result and put your mind at ease.

Congrats on your negative result. It's a good tip to call someone you love, but if they are having a bad day and being bitchy. You have to rely on yourself, chiong with your helmet on and use a condom!
