Chapter 46 – “You can’t hide your lying eyes…..”

“So, what is it that you need my help for?” I asked Devi as we met at a coffeeshop nearby her place. She didn’t reply to my sms yesterday but called me earlier the next morning and asked if we could meet for lunch later that day.

She looked blankly into her cup of teh susu and kept silent. “I mean, look girl, you’re asking me for a loan, right? If you’re not going to tell me what the loan is for, how do you expect me to say yes?” I reasoned with her.

“I don’t know how should I say it…..” she mumbled. “Just say it! Be honest with me,” I shot back. Taking a deep breath, she sighed, “It’s for my sister, Mag.” “Why? What’s wrong with her? Financial problem?” I asked. Nodding, she replied, “Ya. She’s also divorced but no kids. And now she needs to go for an op…..” playing with the spoon in her glass. “What op?” I queried. She didn’t look like she was ready to answer that question and I had a strange feeling that she wasn’t being honest with me. “How much does she need?” “Five thousand,” she answered. “Five thousand dollars for the op?” I asked to reconfirm. She didn’t look at me as she nodded her head while resting her cheek on her left hand and aimlessly stirring the glass with her other hand.

“Are you sure?” I questioned her, “Are you telling me the truth?” She took a deep breath and exhaled heavily. She then sat up straight, with her eyes focussing on anything except me. “If what you’re telling me is true, I wouldn’t mind lending you the money. After all, if it’s for saving a life, and if I can afford it, why not? But, please don’t lie to me…..” I said to her firmly. It’s this gut feel, and probably my inner voice prompting me that it’s not what she says it is.

“No. It’s not for her…..” she finally spoke up after awhile. “I’ve to repay some money to a group of people and it’s hard to borrow from friends”. “Ok, now at least you’re being honest with me. Go on…..” I prodded her. “Do you know what tontine is?” she asked. “Ya,” I replied, nodding. “Well, I’ve been in this tontine group for sometime and I took out some money from them. It’s time for me to put back but I don’t have the funds…..” she revealed. “Tontine is illegal, right?” I asked her. She again looked at the table and nodded her head sheepishly. “And you’re a policewoman somemore! You should know better than to get involved with a tontine group when you’re supposed to be upholding the law…..” I began to lecture her. “Did you know that an entire family was slaughtered many, many years ago in Toa Payoh because of that?” I asked. “And what if you get caught? Dismissed from the force, charged in court. Maybe fine or even jail! What’s going to happen to Mala then?” I asked ludicrously. She dared not to look at me all this while.

“I promise that I’ll pay you back, with interest, if you want…..” she said, suddenly reaching out for my hand and gripping it, her voice choking up. “You crazy ah?” I remarked. “You want me to get arrested for illegal moneylending is it? Lend money to a policewoman and charge interest some more! Wah lau eh!” I exclaimed, slapping my forehead in disbelief at what she had proposed. Tears were soon welling up in her eyes while some nosy patrons were stealing glances at our direction, wondering why an Indian woman was tearing and holding on to the hand of a Chinese man…..

“Let me think about it first. When do you need to return them the money?” I asked her. “By the end of next week,” she sobbed. “Don’t cry ok? Let me think about it and I’ll get back to you…..” I told her. “I promise you, I’ll pay you back. Every single cent…..” she whimered. An image of her naked then flashed across my mind, deep throating me and buckling like a rodeo bull. Must be that omnipresent horny devil, I sighed to myself…..

So, what was I to do now? Should I lend her the money, or should I just say no? Will it be just this once, or will it recur again? Noting that she’s a woman in blue, I believe that she knows the consequences of being involved with an illegal act like this. But then, being desperate can drive some to think and act illogically. “Fuck!!” I seem to be damn good in getting myself entangled into such situations. And I’m lost.....

1. If you are able to afford not getting repaid, then lend the $5,000, but do not charge any interest.

2. Assuming that she will be hungry for you, and will be able, willing and ready to meet with you on a regular basis, say for the next year, if not longer, then whether or not she repay the $5,000, provided you do not lend any further amount, then I believe you will receive your returns in kind.

Notwithstanding the above, if I were you, I would not inform any of the other ladies, including your CO or OC.
