A recent operation by the Batam, Rempang and Galang ( Barelang ) Police have highlighted the extent of an issue afflicting those areas, namely online prostitution.

The Barelang Police arrested 10 women allegedly involved in online prostitution activity, which offered commercial sex services via the Internet. The police also named three people suspects in the case.

The Barelang Police’s head of crime and investigations unit, Comr. Memo Ardian said the online prostitution was discovered following their investigation into the growing problem of sex services offered on the internet, one of which was on the Cewek Panggilan Batam ( Batam Call Girls ) site. A number of suggestive pictures of women, which contained pornographic elements, were displayed on the site.

“The police’s information and technology team then tracked down the whereabouts of the site and it was found that it operated in Batam,” said Memo. The police carried out the arrests on April 25, he added.

Memo said the 10 young women arrested were commercial sex workers operating online while the three other people named suspects allegedly played roles as cashier, procuress and broker in the business.

“We will investigate consumers of their sex services. We have got phone numbers from their books,” said Memo.

The police chief further revealed the online prostitution operators received orders from their customers, who were mostly Singaporean and Malaysian residents and other visitors, by phone. Most of the customers knew what services were offered on the site, he said.

It was further revealed that after reaching an agreement with the procuress on the type of prostitute they wanted and their prices, the customers would arrange a meeting venue to which the prostitutes would be brought.

The online prostitutes were offered at various prices, starting from Rp 500,000 ( US$37.89 ) for short time and Rp 1.5 million for a whole-day booking.

“Most of their customers are residents of our neighboring countries and other outsiders. We are still investigating the case,” said Memo.

He said the suspects would be charged with violating the Criminal Code on prostitution and Law No.11/2008 on electronic information and transactions ( ITE ).

An NGO activist concerned with women and children’s protection, Retno Permatasari, welcomed the police’s actions against online prostitution in Batam.

“We hope the measures can be taken against not only one site but also against all online prostitution businesses currently operating. We’ve seen it [online prostitution] take place in more than one place,” said Retno.

She said the majority of customers using the online prostitution services were men from Singapore and Malaysia, who spent their weekend in Batam.

“The commercial sexual workers are organized by prostitution groups but some of them offer themselves individually via social media,” said Retno.

A new species of wasp discovered on the Indonesian island Sulawesi is two-and-a-half inches long, and has jaws so vast that its discoverer admits, "I don"t know how it can walk."

Lynn Kimsey, professor of entomology at the University of California, Davis, says ‘Its jaws are so large that they wrap up either side of the head when closed. When the jaws are open they are actually longer than the male’s front legs."

Kimsey discovered the warrior wasp on the Mekongga Mountains in southeastern Sulawesi.
She says its enormous size and ferocity makes it like "the Komodo Dragon of wasps".
‘I’m going to name it Garuda, after the national symbol of Indonesia,’ Kimsey said.

Garuda - known as "King of Birds" - is a powerful mythical warrior that’s part human and part eagle, boasts a large wingspan, martial prowess and breakneck speed.

‘The first time I saw the wasp I knew it was something really unusual,’ said Kimsey.
‘I had never seen anything like this species of Dalara. We don’t know anything about the biology of these wasps. They are only known from southwestern Sulawesi.’

"The large jaws probably play a role in defense and reproduction," she said.
‘In another species in the genus the males hang out in the nest entrance.

MONKEYS in Indonesia are being chained up and forced to perform human tasks for tourists.

These shocking pictures from the slums of Jakarta show the primates dressed up in bizarre costumes and made to ride bikes and scooters while their owners collect money from spectators.

The long tailed macaques are sold for as little as £14 in the country and undergo agonising training regimes at the Masked Monkey Park.

Some of the cruel trainers even hang the moneys upside down or strap their arms behind their backs to force the monkeys to walk upright.

One of the trainers called Cecep explained that around half the monkeys undergoing the training died.

He said: “I’ve lost count of how many monkeys have died.

“It’s the risk we have to take. Treating them leniently will not make them able to do anything,’

“Sometimes I feel pity for the monkeys, but life is hard in Jakarta.”

Animal rights activists said the practice was cruel and against the law.
Pramudya Harzani from the Jakarta Animal Aid Network, said: “In the first two weeks of training, the monkeys suffer incredibly.

“They are hung and forced to do things humans do.

“Many monkeys don’t make it and die.”

The government’s intention to impose harsh punishments on perpetrators of child sexual abuse, as stipulated in a new regulation in lieu of law ( Perppu ), has gained wide support from lawmakers from various political parties.

Many of the lawmakers, however, are still considering whether the Perppu will become an independent law or will be deliberated as part of a sexual violence bill at the House of Representatives.

“There are two ways to accommodate the Perppu: inserting it into the sexual violence bill or deliberating it as a separate bill. But it is a technical issue," said Arif Wibowo, a lawmaker from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle ( PDI-P ).

President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo signed a Perppu on Wednesday on sexual violence against children.

The punishments include a minimum sentence of 10 years’ imprisonment, a maximum sentence of the death penalty, and additional penalties such as the publication of sex crime convicts’ identities, chemical castration and the use of electronic tags for pedophiles and child rapists.

The secretary of the Golkar Party’s faction in the House, Azis Syamsuddin, praised the Perppu, saying the only thing left was law enforcement.

He preferred including the Perppu in the bill being debated by lawmakers. "We will include the Perppu in the sexual violence bill because the Perppu is not comprehensive," he said, adding that his party would carry out a thorough study over three months to ascertain whether castration or other punishments would give a deterrent effect.

Chairman of the Gerindra faction Ahmad Muzani said his party supported the maximum sentences stipulated in the Perppu, but said lawmakers needed to look into whether the Perppu had a long-term perspective in fighting the sexual abuse of children.

“We need to create a long-term regulation. The Perppu was published because of the urgency and usually has only a short-term orientation," Muzani said.

Another Gerindra lawmaker, Muhammad Syafi'i, however, opposed the chemical castration, saying such crimes could be also perpetrated with other body parts, not only the genitals. "I don't really support the castration; the perpetrators should get the death sentence instead," Syafi'i said.

Echoing Syafi’i’s comments, Democratic Party deputy chairman Sjarifuddin Hasan said the government must provide a deterrent effect. Therefore, he agreed with the death penalty for adult perpetrators.

Meanwhile, a lawmaker from the National Awakening Party ( PKB ) appreciated the government’s seriousness in providing a legal basis to take harsh action against sexual criminals, but added that the government should also get serious in preventing the spread of pornography.

"We fully support the government's move, but it must be followed by the government's strict actions to close sites that contain porn," PKB faction chairman Jazilul Fawaid said, adding that alcohol consumption and watching pornography could lead to sex crimes.

The Hanura Party considered the Perppu to be a legal basis to "save our next generation". The party believed the Perppu’s issuance was of urgent importance, and it supported the castration punishment, Hanura deputy chairman Nurdin Tampubolon said.

Indonesia has some of the lowest cigarette prices in the world, with a pack costing just US$1.

In a country where 28.6 million people are still living below the poverty line, cigarette addiction makes low-income people even poorer, to the extent where some people sacrifice basic necessities — such as their children’s education — in order to buy cigarettes.

Health Minister Nila F. Moeloek said recently that she had noticed an alarming trend where children dropped out of school because their parents preferred to spend their income on cigarettes, rather than education.

“There are many children who have to drop out of school because of a lack of money. And we have lost count of how many children are malnourished because the household spending goes mostly to cigarettes,” she said.

The poorest families in Indonesia spend almost 12 percent of their incomes on cigarettes, according to a report on Indonesia by the Global Adult Tobacco Survey ( GATS ) in 2011.

Furthermore, cigarettes have become the second biggest household expense in both urban and rural families after rice, according to a 2015 survey from the Central Statistics Agency ( BPS ).

While there has yet to be a study on how many children’s educations are sacrificed because of their parents’ smoking habit, there are many real-life anecdotes.

One instance is the case of a fisherman in Muara Angke, North Jakarta, whose two children dropped out of school because their father’s daily income of Rp 50,000 went to four packs of cigarettes per day, according to National Commission on Tobacco Control commissioner Fuad Baradja.

Nila said that Indonesian children stayed an average of 8.3 years in school, further indicating that high cigarette consumption ate up money that could have been spent on other necessities.

“While there could be many reasons that children drop out of school, one of them might be because the parents are not focusing enough on funding their children’s education. Even though the government has provided financial assistance for education, why is it only eight years?” she said.

There are countless other intangible costs of smoking, which are often easily forgotten.

“If a father is smoking inside his house and his daughter is having respiratory problems because of that, just count the cost incurred from the days when she has to skip school. What about medicine for her? And the father might also have to leave work to take his daughter to the doctor,” said Nila.

The government has tightened surveillance on foreigners living in the country following concerns about drug trafficking cases, according to the Law and Human Rights Ministry.

The Central Java administration is setting up a watchdog group to monitor the movement of foreigners in the region in a bid to reduce the number of those who commit crimes, the ministry’s director general of immigration, Ronny F. Sompie, said on Thursday in Semarang.

“If they harm us, we will deport them. We have selective measures,” Ronny asserted.

The Foreigners Monitoring Team ( Pora ) consists of 33 secretariats under six immigration offices in Central Java, tasked with monitoring the entry and exit of foreign nationals, he said.

Ronny added that the team would form smaller groups to track the movements of foreigners at subdistrict levels, including at bus terminals, train stations, ports and airports.

According to Pora data, 85 of the 2,000 foreigners registered in Semarang were involved in crimes from January to April.

The National Narcotics Agency’s ( BNN ) Central Java head Brig. Gen. Amrin Remico said there was a new trend in drug trafficking in Semarang where drug dealers were marrying local people to cover up their crimes.

“Last January, we succeeded in discovering a drug network from China and seized 97 kilograms of narcotics,” Amrin added.

The South Jakarta Immigration Office previously announced that it had set up a team to monitor the large number of foreigners living in Jakarta.

A strong undersea earthquake magnitude 6.5 on richter scale hit the Indonesian port city of Padang on Thursday, officials and residents said, but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The quake was centred about 155 km south of Padang, off the coast of Sumatra island at a depth of about 50 km , with a magnitude of 6.5, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported.

The USGS said the quake had a depth of 50.8 kilometers, reports New Zealand Herald.

Indonesia' Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency, said the earthquake which struck at 5:56 a.m. (2256 GMT) had no potential to trigger tsunami.

Indonesia is prone to earthquakes due to its location on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," an arc of volcanoes and fault lines in the Pacific basin.

In December 2004, a massive earthquake off Sumatra island triggered a tsunami that killed 230,000 people in a dozen countries.
