Should not that levy be abolished for maids and then reinstated on PMET jobs?

This way it will make it expensive to hire foreigners but create a cheap supply
of maids (to cook/clean and take care of kids), isn't this better?

Indeed puzzling. On one hand, our govt wants us to have kids. On the other hand, they are increasing the levy and making it more and more expensive to get a maid.

Most young couples are not able to afford staying close to their parents who mostly stay in matured estate. To get their parents to help look after the kids, we will need a car to ferry the kids. Disregarding the time and effort to ferry the kid, the bloody high car prices is another killer!

With cost of preschool at 1000+/mth, higher housing cost, car prices etc, how many of us can actually afford to have only one spouse working to support the family? To add salt to the wounds, even maid levy is going up. And govt is still questioning why we are not producing more kids despite giving us the GENEROUS $8k baby bonus? The answer should be obvious.

Things will only get worse as more and more Singaporeans refuse to have kids due to the high costs and stress. To counter the low birth rate, our govt will have to continue importing FTs which will further aggravate the situation and reduces our birth rate. A vicious cycle that our million dollar ministers have to find an solution to.

Singapore is a small island with NO natural resources to rely on.


Our PAP govt has done a shrewd job by building strong national reserves($300+ billion) to tie us over in case of unforeseen disaster.


How far wrong can our govt done if they are able to build such massive reserves to protect our tiny little island, we should give credit to them where its due !!! Tell me how many country in the world have such massive national reserves ???
