Some Vietnamese youth have an attitude problem
============================================

They will not give up seats for the elderly and pregnant women on buses. They will not volunteer to keep the streets clean.

Tolerance, sacrifice and caring for the community are ranked at the bottom of their values.

Meet the youth of today.

Psychologist Huynh Ngoc Son made these discoveries in a survey of 873 college students in Ho Chi Minh City.

Nguyen Thi Oanh, a community development researcher, said at a conference on students’ attitudes towards ethics and morality on Wednesday that some students these days had “too big an ego. They place their interests above the community’s,” she said.

Nguyen Thi Tu, a psychologist from the HCMC University of Education, said loose relationships between parents and children today is one of the causes.

Many adults have become bad examples for children, she added.

Late psychologist To Thi Anh once remembered that about eight students gave up their seats to her on the bus when she was in the Czech Republic.

Oanh, more than 70 years old, remarked eight schoolgirls once ignored her on a bus in Vietnam.

What is most disheartening is the finding that most students showed no desire to change themselves.

So it is up to the adults, the parents to take the initiative.

A lesson on history....unfortunate its on chinese...

Re: Tieng Viet lovers club

We got this at Orchid country club too.....

War games
==============

A new way to spend a day in the Mekong Delta doesn’t involve floating markets or a coconut candy factory.

The Paintball Club offers customers a chance to shoot and “kill” without all the bloodshed and tears.

The 70 x 30 meter battlefield, Vietnam’s first paintball venue, opened last month in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho.

Players hide behind logs, empty gasoline barrels and tires while shooting each other in games of Capture the Flag.

Each team of between seven and 10 players has a flag that they place on their side of the battlefield.

The goal is to swipe the opposing team’s flag and bring it back to your own side without getting shot.

If you do get hit by a paintball, you’re “dead” or out. A referee keeps an eye on the game to make sure those who are hit step outside the field.

Paintball Club provides players with aluminum alloy paintball guns, paintballs, protective clothes and a mask.

Balls cost VND950 (5 cents) each and players can buy as many as they want.

Each round of combat lasts 30 minutes. Tickets cost VND30,000 (US$1.8) for one round, VND40,000 ($2.4) for two rounds or VND45,000 ($2.6) for three rounds.

There is also a firing range where shooters are only charged for balls.

To play, customers must be over 16 and register with the club by presenting photo I.D.

The Paintball Club is located at Military Zone 9 Stadium, 91A Cach Mang Thang Tam Street, An Thoi Ward, Can Tho City.

Re: Tieng Viet lovers club

Sgp govt clever, knows how to earn more $$$, ppl go online gambling, govt cant tax them, so they legalise gambling so they can tax tax tax.... and control easier

Online casinos thrive in no-gambling state
==================================

Underground gambling has gone wireless to evade Vietnam’s strict anti-gaming laws.

At a Ho Chi Minh City café near the airport, a gambler who asked to be known only as T. points to a man concentrating on his laptop.

“He’s gambling now,” says T.

“He sold his luxury car and several motorbikes to pay debts he piled up after only three months of online gambling.”

The story is a common one.

With wifi technology allowing any gambler with a laptop to place bets any time or place, online racketeers appear to be one step ahead of Vietnam’s anti-gambling laws.

T. says he knows jewelry traders, property dealers, artists and wives of wealthy tycoons who all gamble online.

After opening an account at an Internet gambling website, players have to pay a deposit, says T.

Collectors come directly to customers’ doors to collect cash and distribute winnings.

T. says some privileged regular customers can play on credit, also warning that agency collectors don’t hesitate to swipe property if bills don’t get paid.

A recent report said the most popular online casino was operated by King’s Crown Casino in Cambodia, located near the border of southern Vietnam’s Tay Ninh Province.

New gamers have to ask influential gamblers in the city to introduce them over the phone to the manager of the online casino in Cambodia, who will ask employees in HCMC to collect a deposit of no less than US$500 to open an account, said the report.

The article cited a source as saying the casino had two shareholders in HCMC that managed accounts and employees in the southern hub and nearby provinces.

The story said the casino collected up to hundreds of thousands of US dollars per day from gamblers in districts 1, 5 and 10.

One gambler cited in the report said his friend lost nearly $10,000 to King’s Crown.

A police officer from the HCMC Police Department said a number of gamblers had reported being cheated.

Several gamblers said they had won big in their first games before they started losing even bigger.

Some reported that money would mysteriously vanish from their accounts and a few even said their accounts hadn’t ever been opened after paying the deposit.

Investigation

An official from the Ministry of Public Security said an investigation into online gambling rings in Vietnam would be launched.

He said the organizers of online gambling could face criminal charges.

A HCMC police officer said no Internet gambling organization had been caught in Vietnam as the medium was relatively new.

Truong Xuan Tam, deputy chairman of the Ba Ria – Vung Tau Province Bar Association, said gamblers could also face criminal charges if VND1 million ($57) or more was involved in the case.

An offense involving less than VND1 million would warrant a fine, he said.

He also said that while owners of the online gambling services might be abroad, locals on their payroll could face criminal charges if caught facilitating gambling in Vietnam.

Festive Da Nang: A must-see destination in March
=========================================

The south central coast port city of Da Nang is going to celebrate with a variety of festivals and events, the highlights are the international firework competition 2009 and the Bodhisattva festival in March.

The first event is Bodhisattva festival, which will last for 3 days from March 11 to 13.

On the opening day, the festival will include several activities at various venues, including a camp opening ceremony, traditional sports activities, inauguration of the calligraphy and tea exhibition, and a poet and music forum at Bodhisattva Temple.

There will also a competition to create ‘Non Nuoc,’ Vietnamese stone work art, at the western gate of the Marble Mountains, plus traditional music at Thuy Son Mountain.

The biggest event on the day is the debut of the painting ‘Da Nang – Thanh pho moi truong’ (Da Nang – Environmental city’) followed by the official inauguration of the whole festival

The two following days will continue with a variety of cultural activities, such as a traditional boat race and night festival complete with flower garlands and colored lanterns on Co Co River, a Vegetarian food contest, Dharma classes and a human chess competition at the Temple.

Another choice is to watch the show by Nguyen Hien Dinh Theatre, whose major is performing ‘tuong’. During the show, the guests will be able to enjoy some dances like ‘Trinh Tuong’, ‘Peacock’, and ‘ApSaRa’, a classical mix of the song ‘Viet Nam Que huong toi’ (‘Vietnam, my homeland’), an extract from the play ‘Manh Luong ra hang’ (‘Manh Luong get out of his cave’) and a performance combining music and dance, ‘Sac bua’.

The schedule is yet to be finalized but the organizers promised to offer much in March.

From March 23 to March 26, various activities will be carried out in welcoming the 2009 international fireworks competition over March 27-28.

The ‘Non Nuoc’ stones art arrangement exhibition on Bach Dang Street on March 23 will open the series of activities.

Two days later, the Ba Na Hills will inaugurate the first phase of its new cable car system. The system, which allows visitors to depart from the foot of Ba Na hills to arrive at Vong Nguyet Top, will participate in two world records: the world’s longest one-rope cable car system at 5,042.62 meters and as the world highest cable car at 1,291.81 meters above sea level.

On the cable car, visitors will see ‘Toc Tien’ (‘Fairy hair’) waterfall, Linh Ung temple, and also ‘dao chuong’ (‘En klanthus quinque fiorus lour’) flowers, a species special to Ba Na Hills.

On the same day, the Hai Chau Village Festival will be inaugurated at the village’s Communal House and remain open until March 27.

One day later, the fine arts exhibition will be opened over March 26-31 at the Old People’s Fine Art Club, while another exhibition presenting antique Champa terracotta will be inaugurated at the Champa Museum and remain open until April 5.

Other activities are the Food Festival, ‘Da vu thanh nien’ (‘Youth’s Banquet’) show to present music, classical dances and modern dances and a performance by an Indian group.

During the firework competition, the Han River will not only see the sparkling sky of various fireworks by China, Australia, Spain, Philippines and Vietnam but also will enjoy some cultural activities like the ‘flower boat’ parade and flower garlands and coloured lanterns.

Indochina Airlines promised to offer the lowest fare rate at VND1 million ($57) for a return ticket from Ha Noi/Ho Chi Minh – Da Nang. The promotion price is only available for tour packages during the festival.

The waterfalls of Dong Nai
========================

Barely an hour from Ho Chi Minh City by car, Dong Nai Province to the east is an ideal place for day-trippers who like waterfalls and the peaceful, stress-relieving scenery around them.

Dong Nai’s waterfalls are easy to reach as they are mostly located close to National Highway 20, the main road from HCMC to Da Lat in the Highlands.

One of the most popular waterfalls, and the closest, is Giang Dien some 50 kilometers from downtown HCMC via National Highway 1.

Here you can swim in the stream, lie on the grassy hillocks, enjoy the wildflowers and even spend the night camping.

Hiring a tent that can fit four adults costs a mere VND100,000 (less than US$6).

If you like hot springs, then Mai Waterfall near the confluence of the Dong Nai and La Nga rivers is the place to go.

Mai is located in a timber plantation in Tan Phu District and boasts pretty scenery and Da Ban Hot Springs, where you can soak your legs to unwind and boil eggs to eat.

The farthest away from HCMC are Ba Giot and Thuong waterfalls. They are about four kilometers apart but can be reached by the same route in Dinh Quan and Tan Phu districts.

Visiting both in one day is easily within the stamina of the average tourist.

The stream at Ba Giot Waterfall flows in rapids and pours over the edge in three falls, which are best viewed from upstream if you want to capture the full grandeur and beauty.

Thuong Waterfall, on the other hand, is milder and set amid green and gentle scenery. The cool stream swirls quietly past big rocks under evergreen trees and is excellent for soaking in and mucking about.

Pedal-boating on the quieter reaches of the water, as well as camping, are available at all these waterfalls.

The jungle of Cat Tien National Park in Dong Nai boasts a few falls in more rugged settings and should be on the itinerary of every cascade lover. The park’s best-known waterfalls are Da Dung, Troi, and Mo Vet.

Each of the waterfalls in Dong Nai is special in its own way, and all are memorable.
