SINGAPORE — The Government will address the Zika issue when Parliament sits at noon on Tuesday, as the number of cases continues to increase.

Health Minister Gan Kim Yong and Environment and Water Resources Minister Masagos Zulkifli are expected to deliver ministerial statements on tackling the Zika outbreak.

Twelve parliamentary questions related to the outbreak and mosquito breeding were tabled by Members of Parliament (MPs), among them Ms Tin Pei Ling (MacPherson), who asked if free Zika screenings could be offered to residents of affected areas and what support would be given to pregnant women suspected of being infected with the virus.

Non-Constituency MP Daniel Goh asked what was being done to better manage the health of workers living in dormitories and on construction sites, while Mr Alex Yam (Marsiling Yew-Tee GRC) has asked if the Ministry of Health would consider setting up a National Zika Registry.

Malaysia bans school trips to Singapore, Philippines over Zika fears

KOTA TINGGI • Malaysia's Education Ministry has imposed a temporary ban on school trips and other education-related visits to Singapore and the Philippines to prevent the spread of the Zika virus, according to Malaysian media reports.

The ministry issued a nationwide circular to all state and district-level education authorities announcing the temporary ban on Sept 1 after a high-level ministry meeting, Education Minister Mahdzir Khalid said yesterday.

"A circular was issued to all district education offices, state education departments and schools for all trips to Singapore and the Philippines to be postponed for the time being because of the cases of Zika in those countries," the New Straits Times quoted Datuk Seri Mahdzir as saying.

Malaysia on Sept 1 reported its first case of Zika in a 58-year-old woman who had visited Singapore.

The Malaysian Education Ministry's directive will remain in place until the country's Health Ministry issues an update on the Zika situation in Singapore and the Philippines.

WHO expert points out that people must not take needless risks based on unproven claims

Some experts believe that being infected with Zika once confers lifelong immunity, but that is only an assumption, says infectious diseases expert David Heymann.

Dr Heymann, who chairs the World Health Organisation's (WHO) Emergency Committee on Zika virus, said experts assume there will be protection "because that's the natural way the body responds".

"But we don't know," he told The Sunday Times, adding: "What you know (about Zika) is important, but what you don't know is even more important."

Another unknown is whether being infected with one Zika strain protects against other strains. Both the Brazilian strain, which has caused many cases of microcephaly or abnormally small heads in unborn babies, and the one found in Singapore come from the same Asian lineage, though they are distinct and different from one another.

Dr Heymann, who is professor of infectious disease epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, said studies are ongoing to find out why the incidence of microcephaly is much higher in the north-eastern part of Brazil. Experts postulate that it could be due to co-factors, such as another organism or environmental pollutants.

This I have to agree with you . What is there to address ? The fact that Zika is here already . China can offer free testing for Zika and Singapore charges $60.00 plus consultations . They should be coming out with an action plan on how to combat the Aedes mosquitos population . At the same time should discuss on how to protect your citizens from Zika . As they say talk is cheap but in Singapore talk is very expensive.

11 new Zika cases, bringing total number of cases to 329 with 8 pregnant women confirmed


SINGAPORE - Another 11 new cases of locally transmitted Zika were confirmed by noon on Sunday (Sept 11), the Ministry of Health (MOH) announced in a joint statement with the National Environment Agency.

One case is linked to the cluster in Elite Terrace, while the remaining 10 have no known links to any existing cluster.

Eight pregnant women have been confirmed to have Zika. Their doctors are monitoring their conditions as well as providing counselling and support.

The total number of cases in Singapore has reached 329, two weeks after the first cluster was reported in the Aljunied Crescent/Sims Drive area.

That cluster has swelled to include Kallang Way and Paya Lebar way.

From Monday (Sept 12), NEA and MOH will be providing daily updates via NEA's website (www.nea.gov.sg/zika-clusters) in place of daily media statements.

Firstly they'll say stop breeding is most important.
Then they'll pass the buck n problem to the hapless sporean by making mosquito a caning offence. So sporeans will kanna even if not at fault

When sporean ask who'll pay for rearing of child with birth defects or who'll pay for abortion, garbagement will say don't bother me. There's no free lunch in spore.
