Re: Low cost Tiger Air to fly to 3 Chinese cities
Quote:
Zhongshan was originally named Xiangshan (meaning fragrant mountain) as there are five mountains filled with fragrant flowers. The city was renamed as Zhongshan in 1925 in memory of Dr. Sun Yatsen. Major tourist attractions are former residence of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, Sunwen Memorial Park, Zhongshan Town, which is a TV program-making base of CCTV, Sunwen West Road, which is a pedestrian shopping street featuring local history and culture. There are Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, Zhongshan Hot Springs, Spring & Forest Valley, Seaside Resort, a river-crisscrossing area with strong South China features, Zimaling Park, Wen Tower atop Bufeng Peak and Happy Valley. I will select a few interesting one just to tie over my day time activity. Another sound interesting place is Huangpu Military Academy (Whampoa Military Academy) at Guangzhou....... recalling back in yester year, this academy was set up by Dr Sun Yat Sun. Wonder is it still functioning or has became a historical museum. . |

Re: Low cost Tiger Air to fly to 3 Chinese cities
Haikou was once an infamous for its 'wild-east' boomtown sleaze had been cleaned up considerably. But still there are plenty of neon-encrusted karaoke bars, Saunas and Discos, as in many Chinese cities. The best bet for evening entertainment is to stroll the streets. There are 2 interesting night markets just off Jicheng Lu south and Haixiu Lu. Perhaps you can try your luck there......

Re: Low cost Tiger Air to fly to 3 Chinese cities
At Haikou, the main shopping complex there is the DC Departmental Store.
SANYA - The hotels are centred along DaDongHai Beach. Most action is on Yuhai Lu where there are most of seafood restaurants and beachside bars. It is fun and pleasure to shop along DaDongHai main boardwalk. .

Re: Low cost Tiger Air to fly to 3 Chinese cities
Haikou & Sanya
Business will be booming in Haikou especially with this new TIGER budget flight there. Before the strict enforcement on Street Walkers (SW), there were flooded with street walkers on the pavement on Haixiu donglu (about 150 Y for ST). The BBs are in full operation in Wuzhishan lu (formerly Jichang lu), the street that starts at Haikou Hotel. Only 4 BBs in this street (2 of them are up to the end of the street), but more in side alleys, look well. Especially in Longshe lu, that starts just above Overseas Hotel. Don't hesitate to walk nearly to the end of this street, there are some real gems. I prefer the BBS girls than the SW. The SW are quite problematic when it comes to money. They always demand for more than agreed, and lie shamelessly. The BBS girls are better and younger. And they actually come to cheaper at the end of the day. In another part of the town, on Yanzao lu, near Hainan People's Hospital, there are a few very cheap BBS, but only restricted to HJ, and they are not that pretty. Understand that in the month of April 2006 there are some International Trade Fair there and the Government had since start ‘a big cleaning’ up of the city. Many of the SW soliciting places had been scattered and operated elsewhere. I was also surprising to hear that many Caucasians go to Haikou to join the fishing trip there. Mongering at Sanya is rather expensive especially in the ‘legal’ hotel. Intime Resort charged VIP room with double-bed for FS at rmb 800 for 45 min. And at Palm Beach Resort & Spa?. The Spa at the basement of Landmark Hotel charged rmb 388 for its sauna and facilities (locker, bath etc) and 3somes for rmb 1000 (exclude FS). There are at least 100 better mongering cities in China, tried to avoid Sanya if you are a mongerer.

Re: Low cost Tiger Air to fly to 3 Chinese cities
Transportation in Hainan Island
Flying is the easiest way out of Haikou, with the city connected to Sanya and mainland locations between Ürümqi and Hong Kong. Tickets for all airlines can be reserved at CAAC (8am-10.30pm; tel 6763166) on Haixiu Lu, next to the Civil Aviation Hotel. Ferries leave Haikou's New Port about every hour to Hai'an, at Guangdong's southernmost tip (90min; buses meet ferries for the 150km run to Zhanjiang); twice daily to Zhanjiang (3hr); three times a day to Beihai (11hr); and several times a week to Guangzhou and Hong Kong (25hr). Some Beihai services also leave from Xiuying Wharf. Ticket offices at the ports open daily 9am-4pm, and there's usually no trouble in getting a seat for the next service. Various levels of comfort, from bench seats to beds, are available on the longer hauls, and it's definitely worth paying for a cabin rather than spending the trip surrounded by seasick hordes watching non-stop kung fu flicks. Your accommodation will be able to make bookings for boats and planes if you give them at least a day's notice. The practicalities of getting out by bus depend on where you're heading. Most roads lead to Sanya , with normal services leaving regularly 7am-6.30pm from the long-distance bus station, where you can also buy tickets for luxury buses which speed down the highway from a depot in southern Haikou - there's a free minibus to the departure point from the long-distance bus station. The long-distance station also has daily departures to all of Hainan's larger settlements, and through services (ferry fare included) to the mainland cities of Liuzhou, Guilin, Beihai and Nanning in Guangxi, and to Guangzhou, Hai'an and Zhanjiang in Guangdong. More local destinations are covered by minibuses from depots on the relevant sides of town. To reach these, take bus #6 from Changti Dadao 5km out to the western depot , and buses #1 or #11 from near Haikou Park to the eastern depot , 2km along Haifu Dadao. Haikou Haikou downtown area forms a compact block between waterfront Changti Dadao and the airport , about 2km south off Jichang Lu. The centre is marked by a busy mess of wide one-way traffic flows and pedestrian overpasses surrounding Haikou Park , with the most interesting shopping districts in the northerly old colonial quarter along Jiefang Lu and Boai Bei Lu. The New Port is north off Changti Dadao on Xingang Lu, where most ferries from Hong Kong and the mainland pull in; those from Beihai in Guangxi sometimes use the Xiuying Wharf , 5km farther east along Binhai Dadao. Whichever you end up at, high-speed and regular buses to Sanya will be waiting, thus avoiding the need to stay in Haikou. Arriving by road from elsewhere on the island, the long-distance bus station is centrally positioned south of Haikou Park on Daying Houlu, with short-range minibuses dropping off all over the city's outskirts, principally at east and west depots. The crowded central roads don't make Haikou's city bus service a very good way of getting around, except for outlying transit points (bus #6 runs from the west bus depot, links the two ports on Changti Dadao, and then turns down Datong Lu; while buses #1 and #11 run from the east bus depot to the centre along Haifu Dadao). Taxis are much faster and so absurdly plentiful that you have only to pause by the kerb for one to pull up instantly. They cost from ¥10 to hire, and a trip right across the city shouldn't be much more than twice this. There's a total lack of information about the island in Haikou, with hotel tour agents only geared to getting you to Sanya as fast as possible. If you plan to explore Hainan's backwaters, pick up a map of the island from hawkers or kiosks; some include spreads of Haikou, Sanya and Tongshi, along with detailed road maps of the island including even minor sights marked in English.
