Aww I feel bad about the review I wrote about some different mistresses in Japan. After I wrote it, I see direct and indirect reactions to my reviews all over their blogs and web-pages.

I'm a gaijin living in Tokyo (and a total SM freak) and have never really had any issues anywhere in any kind of serious SM place here. The closest I've come to being rejected is when a Japanese guy I met in an SM bar paid for me to play with his regular Domme (who really wasn't my type anyway) on the condition that he watched. She was obvious reluctant to do it, but went through with it anyway.

However, while I haven't experienced any hostility, I frequently experience absolute disbelief from those I encounter in the SM scene. I've met a lot of Japanese people who seriously have no idea that people outside the country do SM. I think that a lot of the rejection that gaijin encounter when they try to access the scene is due to their inability to convince Japanese (across a language barrier) that they are in fact kinky.

The pool of Dommes here is absolutely massive, and like I said they don't have issues playing with gaijin, on the contrary they are usually delighted by a foreigner's interest in their "work". That being said the vast majority of them speak zero English, so Japanese is a must.

Note that this only applies to the hard core SM places. There's a kind of continuum between these and the regular / vanilla sex industry (fuuzoku) places. The further you go along this continuum (towards the fuuzoku end) the higher your chances of rejection are. Japanese establishments (in many industries) like to try and be exclusive, and as a foreigner you are the ultimate outsider. Luckily places that focus on SM get their exclusivity from excluding vanilla people (by their very nature, not that they need to try hard) and so don't feel the need to exclude foreigners, though very few market themselves towards them.
