NEW DELHI – Singapore will support India’s "remarkable" economic development by giving its youth a leg-up in skills training and stepping up involvement in its Smart Cities, among other contributions, said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong after a meeting with PM Narendra Modi at Hyderabad House on Tuesday (Oct 4).

Singapore is happy to support India’s efforts to transform its economy, and to give India’s youth the skills they need,” said Mr Lee, who is on an official visit to India this week—his first since Mr Modi took office in 2014.

During their meeting—described by Mr Lee as “wide-ranging and in-depth”— Mr Lee and Mr Modi discussed bilateral cooperation in the areas of skills development, trade, foreign investments, air connectivity, among other things. Mr Lee also expressed his condolences to the Indian government and families of victims in the Uri attacks last month.

As part of efforts to support the “Skills India” initiative—which aims to train over 400 million by 2022— the Republic will help to set up a Centre of Excellence for Tourism Training in Udaipur, Rajasthan.

In a joint press conference by the two prime ministers, Mr Modi said: "Whether in manufacturing, environment, innovation, technology or delivery of public services, Singapore does today want the rest of the world would do tomorrow."

He added that a road map has been drawn up to realize India's ambitious agenda. "We enjoy a strong network of business to business partnerships. In this context, PM Lee and I have agreed to expedite the second review of our comprehensive economic cooperation agreement. The MOU on intellectual property signed today will facilitate greater business to business exchanges and collaborations."

ITE Education Services will train and conduct leadership programmes for CETT staff and trainers, and collaborate with their Indian counterparts to develop Advanced Skills Training for Indian youths. The centre will be launched when Mr Lee visits Rajasthan on Thursday and will commence classes next year.

The leaders also witnessed the exchange of two agreements on cooperation in skills development on Tuesday, including an MOU with the Assam government to explore a similar skills centre in the state.

The Republic is also studying expanding such collaborations to other states, said Mr Lee.

Mr Lee said Singapore is keen to step up its involvement in India's "100 Smart Cities" initiative.

In January last year, Surbana International Consultants and Jurong International were appointed master planners for Amaravati, a new Indian capital city in Andhra Pradesh 10 times the size of Singapore.

In terms of economic and financial cooperation, Mr Lee noted that Singapore was one of India’s largest sources of foreign direct investment last year. In turn, more than 8,000 Indian companies are present in Singapore.

Both countries have appointed senior ministers to research innovate ways to collaborate and deliver "win-win outcomes", said Mr Lee.

Singapore has appointed DPM Tharman Shanmugaratnam while India has appointed Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.

In turn, more than 8,000 Indian companies are present in Singapore.

Liberalising air services in India will also send a "strong signal to the world that India is serious about attracting investments and businesses", said Mr Lee, stressing how India is set to become an aviation hub, given its geographical location and growing market.

With Scoot's maiden flight from Singapore to Jaipur - a popular destination and capital city in Rajasthan state - on Sunday (Oct 2), Singapore is now connected directly to 15 Indian cities.

“Singapore remains a firm believer in India. We will continue to contribute, where we can, to India’s remarkable development story,” said Mr Lee.
