Inspired by true stories and real-life characters, PLEASURE FACTORY tells an intimate and seductive tale involving pleasure seekers and pleasure providers in Geylang, Singapore's red light district. In the course of one night, an army boy loses his virginity with the help of his experienced buddy; a teenage girl gets initiated into the pleasure manufacturing process; and a jaded prostitute pays a young busker good money in exchange for a song he never gets to sing.

Thailand's/Singapore's ‘Pleasure Factory’ to be shown at the Bangkok International Film Festival

A side of Singapore visitors may not know about is the Geylang red light area of the city. It’s been described as a ‘black hole’ in the otherwise pristine city of wealth, cleanliness and orderliness. This 2007 film will be shown at the forthcoming Bangkok International Film Festival and amongst others is certain to raise a few eyebrows.

The film ‘Pleasure Factory’ is directed by the Thai film director Ekachai Uekrongtham and shot entirely on location in this unique part of Singapore – an area largely ignored by the government. The film employs local ‘street cast’ people as the actors whose lives belong to the streets of Geylang. This is very surprising given that the city fathers will fine you for eating on the subway, prostitution is legal in Singapore.

The main characters are played by Taiwanese actress Yang Kuie-Me, and Australian-Laotian actor Ananda Everingham. Director Ekachai Uekrongtham is well known for his previous work Beautiful Boxer which tells the story of the transgender kick boxer Nong Toom. Clearly a director who enjoys a challenge, Ekachai says filming for Pleasure Factory was fraught with difficulties but he received a warm welcome from many of the workers in the area. The Singapore authorities have yet to decide whether the film will be shown in the city.

As with many of the films selected by the committee for the film festival there is an element of controversy about the film, which is bound to bring in curious audiences from all walks of life.

The Bangkok International Film Festival runs from 19th July to 29th July and will be staged at the SF Cinema at the Central World complex. Further information is available from www.bangkokfilm.org.

it takes a Thai director to make a film about Singapore's commercial sex landmark. maybe Singapore directors like Eric Khoo can make a film about Thailand's commercial sex landmarks such as Ratchada massage parlours, Nana Plaza, Pattaya bars, etc. haha. :D

Its not exactly in the porn catagory, neither are the sex scene as explict as in lust, caution. Its rather more in the art catagory. Very little talking, alot of reflecting and characters in thoughts. Prostitutes crying, in tears, homosexual looking at vending machine and fantasizing about his army buddy.

The ah pek that went to the cinema just fall asleep after like 10mins and snoring loudly.

Forget about watching the movie if you want to watch it for the sex. But its an entertaining movie if you like this genre of movie.
