A Grab car driver was sentenced to five weeks’ jail on Tuesday (15 August) for punching a Japanese man near Cuppage Plaza.

Shidee Abdul Wahab, a 28-year-old Singaporean, was convicted in the State Courts of voluntarily causing hurt to Ken Kanada, 43, in April this year.

On the day of the incident, Shidee was driving a grey Toyota Vios car and accompanied by Zul, an acquaintance, and an unknown male Malay person, B3, who knew Zul.

Kanada was out drinking with Tomohiro Kojima, 36, Osamu Takahashi, 40, and Fujihashi Kentaro, 39, at a Japanese club. All four men were Japanese nationals working in Singapore.

While the men were near a taxi stand at the entrance of Cuppage Plaza, they were crossing the road “like it was their right of way”, according to Shidee, which caused him to brake.

After alighting from his car, Shidee noticed that the men appeared to be drunk. He proceeded to attack Kanada and punched him a few times on both his cheeks.

Kojima and Takahashi were also punched during the incident. Shidee claimed that he saw B3 attacking one of the victims.

Kentaro saw Kojima lying the ground and told him that someone had punched him and his teeth were gone. He also noticed that Kanada had lost his spectacles and that Takahashi’s nose was bleeding.

Kanada and Kentaro then saw a man jump into the passenger seat of the car. Kanada wanted to approach Shidee and question him about the incident but the attacker drove off.

The three injured men were conveyed to hospital for their injuries.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Chong Kee En asked the court to impose a six-week jail term on Shidee, saying that the attack was disproportionate to the provocation and that the driver’s passengers were in no danger.

In mitigation, Shidee, who was unrepresented, said that he was stressed and had punched Kanada out of anger.

For voluntarily causing hurt, Shidee could have been jailed up to two years and/or a fine of up to $5,000.
