Well done kiddo.... Use the savings wisely.
When I was your age (18 years ago), I manage to save 40K over 3 years with a monthly basic of 1.4K. Had to clock a lot of OT to take home above 2K.

At 28, I took my saving and went Australia to study for a degree.

I am 24 this year.
I have around $40,000.
Annual Salary is around $36,000 includes bonus etc.
I've been working for around 2 years.
I am not a big spender and tend to be quite thrifty, only spending on necessities etc. As you can see from my join date, I am relatively new here as well.

Haha I saw a similar thread in Singapore salary forum. The replies there damn absurd. So many millionaires in their twenties.

Or sex forum will have different outcome?

Lets analyze whether the medium affects the crowd psychology, or the initial participants affect?

Open up my wallet, I left $12.......

I drove a E-class, living in a terrace house outskirts of town.

Not sure how you can fully paid hdb at your age? With 2 kids simply not many can save up.

No car is a good plus point.

how much u paid for ur degree bro?

It cost 28K for 2 years. With a diploma from Singapore, we jump straight to year 3 and complete in year 4.

In total, I spend 52K (with living expense) and use my last 3K to tour the continent before returning home.

I feel you, bro... I was once like you (when single), save at least 40% of my income. But then got married (which I regret) and have my own home (HDB). This 2 events nearly wipe out my saving.

Now with a basic of 6K, allowance for parents, 1 school going kid, a car (mass market model) and monthly household expense, saving is a pathetic 10% on a good month. No idea how the country expect us to have more children.

I hope I can be healthy and work till I suddenly drop dead (at home, at work or on the street). Then no need to burden my child.

actually I think both you and bro kokoruru did rather well. It takes quite a bit of discipline to save 40-50% of your salary leh. Agree on how hard it is to save with kid and household expenses sia. What to do.. somethings got to give. Hopefully the saving grace is that your HDB can have some capital gain, at least that will give some money if you can choose to downgrade your flat later on. But I have no idea how the common man can retire in peace.. knowing that CPF and general saving are probably not enough for retirement. Need to either invest darn well or like what some insurance guys will say.. buy insurance ( but then that cost more money further ) :(

I'm really curious about those that takw 10k plus a month.. What job are you doing?

I'm in finance, I think give myself a few more years and I can hopefully push myself to senior analyst and prob take home between 6k to 8k if I get all my educations and experience correct.

Those who made it high up and take 10k plus a month.

Are you in sales, or higher management? Or in banking.
Just to satisfy my curiosity.

On a side note.. I think I have to give myself 3 to 5 years before I can successfully hit 100k to 200k savings after divesting my investment.

Not married, plan to marry in 2018.
Not going to have dinner, just honeymoon.
My wife to be isn't local, doing long distance now.
She's Indonesian uni grad, Chinese.

Once married hopefully all the things fall into place and she can get PR and then apply for HDB. I'll be 37 before I get my house :(

Maybe planning to have kids before 35 or 36...
Almost married the wrong lady this year.
Fell apart too late but I wouldn't trade it for the world Coz I met someone amazing after.
Just my sperm is gonna get old first LOL

Everyone achieve different results in life.
I knew a guy about 15 years ago. We both are not from rich familu.
He's a O level holder and a sales exec in a local company & I'm degree holder and a sales engineer in another.
Today, he is a GM in that company & I am a manager in mine.
He's staying in private, owns 3 cars and is a partner in 4 other business.
I am staying in HDB, 1 car and nothing else.

A lot in life depends on opportunity and hard work. But even if you are not as 'make-it' as your peers, don't take it too hard.

Nothing wrong la. Cpf interest is high at 2/2.5% right?

Don't think any short term investment can have this guaranteed yield. Even insurance need minimum 10yrs to achieve 2-3%

If you reach retirement and cpf quite full, got those annuity plan which payout every month to spend i thought?

But honestly, leading a lifestyle now VS retirement. The question is, how many % are you willing to compromise?

It's never too early to plan for retirement.
I'm in my late 20s and i am slowly building up my retirement portfolio, with some blue chips and insurance, instead of being a burden to my children in future (if i get married).

I think the annuity only pays up to about 1.9k if you have the latest highest saving of about 241k. are you sure it would be enough when you retire moons down the road?

Of course when in retirement, must also reel-in on lifestyle.
If I am retired, no sickness and is still can live alone, daily spending of $20 should be sufficient. So in a month, should need $600. Another $200 for S&CC and electricity. Total $800. Factor in inflation and value of $ in 20/30 years time... maybe will be ard $1500.

Yes, life will be boring but can still survive.
So for now, IMO, the plan looks beneficial to me.

Believe that like most of us, you should have done your calculation.

Reduce the principal amount on your housing loan ASAP. Annually, I would do a partial repayment (abt 10K~12K) on mine to reduce the principal amount cos the total interest is ridiculous over 30years.

I think the annuity only pays up to about 1.9k if you have the latest highest saving of about 241k. are you sure it would be enough when you retire moons down the road?

Bro, of cos not.

That's why I am slowly building up my retirement portfolio at the age of 25. (It's never too young to start as I don't wanna become my children's burden next time.)

Currently i have some blue chips and insurance in place. Can you guys give some opinion?
- STI ETF which i will put in at certain interval (DCA)
- Hospitalization plan to cover my hospital bill if anything happens.
- Term Plan covering 500k until 65 years old.
- Whole Life covering 200k, which i will surrender for the money when i retire
- 25 Yrs savings plan which i get payout when I'm 50 years old.

Will definitely review my portfolio again if i have kids. Need to make some changes and allocation money for their planning as well.

Personally, If i think one who wants to depend solely on cpf/gov, bang wall and die faster i think. (they don't owe you a living anyway)

34, No Kids
Annual $54,000 (Used to be $70,000)
Savings $4,000 only
ILPs $20,000 (Cash out period is 2020)
Stocks $1,000 (For fun)
HDB fully paid for (Parents paid and passed it on to me)
CPF Totals: $120k

Have car, Have Loans ($20k worth)

Living from pay cheque to pay cheque clearing off loans, credit card bills (ex-gf left me with a big debt which the interests went spiralling out of control). Most of my pay goes to car, loans and credit card bills.

Am looking much better now compared to exactly 1 year ago. Now only left with 2 cards (1 for petrol, 1 for spending). Cleared and cancelled off 4 cards already around $35k.

Went through depression trying to sort my life and finances out. Boss gave me a decrement and demotion because of my depression period to makes matters worse. I guess my partner now has been so positive and aided me in staying clear and calm despite the bills. Have to take up 2 loans to clear the card debts. Now I'm only left with 1 loan and 2 cards to deal with.

You can ask for monthly payments from the hospital bills. Dont use your credit card. It'll kill you.

I was in a lot of debts when I was in my 30s. Business failed, owed creditors few hundred k. Luckily they gave me some leeway and did not declared me as bankrupt.

All you need to work hard, take multiple jobs, save as much as you can to pay off the debts, suffer for few years, all you can start anew.

I was working 2-3 jobs daily, sometimes over 20 hours, including weekend. I was literally on plain bread for 3 years for my breakfast and lunch. For dinner, it's just plain rice and eggs, sometimes just vegetables only.

You can definitely do it. It's never too late.

It's always the case bro, that's why i always encourage my friends around me to be covered when they're young and they always ask me "why now?".

I'll tell them, insurance is not something like you suka suka anytime can buy wan, you wan buy also must make sure underwriter accept your proposal. Outside look chiochio inside rotten how. :o

If there is no gambling, prostitution, drinking in my life, perhaps now i have at least S$60k savings in bank. I am 27 now, 5 years working, degree holder.

gambling - 30k
pros - 15k
drink - 5k
everything i left now is 10k.

But at least now i know how to plan better financially.

Save before spend.
After save the portion you set, you can spend the remaining on any bloody thing you like.

Hopefully the figure will go up again. now i force myself to save at least 3k/month. Not easy to control the urge of those bad habits thou..

Its never too late to start thinking with the right head and change the course of your life. 27 years old is still very young plus you have a great career. Better start now and lessen your vices as life is getting costlier and tougher. Its still never too late to save up and enjoy more in your 50 where you have peace of mind knowing you have excess for it.

Yeah, cant agree more than that.

At least I controlled quite alot on my gambling side. Banned myself from the casinos, even travel overseas will try not to gamble any single cents, unless for social peer pressure.

But, I am kind of person must enjoy life.
So ladies, alcohol, travel is something so called unavoidable in my life

The point now is how am I going to balance my financial sheet and my internal lust.

Couldn't agree more with this comment bro. However, if you are the type who spends even more when you earn more, then i guess the equation still equals to zero or negative. Like what bro blackcloud said, you are your greatest enemy and no one can stop you unless you stop yourself.

I was in deeply debt many years ago,

Gambling (Casino): - 15k
Gambling (Football): - 35k
Money borrow friend that never comes back & then lost those friend: -5k
Spending on branded items on girls (trying to win their heart but at the end I am only waterfish <--- what a fuck ): -15k

Then I met my wife and before getting married, I manage to settle the debt and start some savings.

Then get married and bought an apartment. Spend how many money I also lost count on wedding photos, wedding ring, wedding dinner, apartment down payment, renovation & furniture.

Today I have:

Bank Balance Cash: 8k
Money borrow friend (another one): 10k (He will pay, just installment)

And my first child is going to born soon....Jialat.

Everything need money. Now chasing my friend settle half of the money he borrow from me.

If I can pay by my own without borrowing any money from Bank then I would be happy already.

After that, I will start saving again.

By the way, I am 33 years old.

Dream to have one Lexus NX200t, that's my TARGET. I am very DETERMINED TO HAVE IT !
