Interesting the charge itself is quite explosive and not your ordinary money laundering case. This refers to cheating which even the Malaysian Parliament Non-Partisan Committee did not infer.

SINGAPORE: Former private wealth banker Yeo Jiawei has been charged under the Corruption, Drug Trafficking and other Serious Crimes Act for acquiring property as part of benefits from criminal conduct.

According to court documents seen by Channel NewsAsia, the 33-year-old Yeo had received S$200,000 in his Bank of China account, "which represents his benefits from cheating", thus committing an offence under the Act. He was charged on Apr 16 in documents signed off by the Commercial Affairs Department.

In a separate Bloomberg report on Friday, Yeo was reported to have been charged following Singapore authorities' investigations into Malaysian state investment fund 1MDB. The former banker had proposed investment products to the fund and was questioned as part of Singapore's probe, Bloomberg said, citing people familiar with the case.

He faces a jail term of up to 10 years, or a fine up to S$500,000, or both, the court documents showed.

The charge against Yeo is among the first formal charges from the 1MDB probe, Bloomberg said. Another former BSI Singapore executive, Yak Yew Chee, has also been investigated and had bank accounts frozen.

The CAD and the Monetary Authority of Singapore had announced in February that they have seized a large number of bank accounts in relation to the probe into 1MDB.
