Police seize arms from Singapore Gun Club, Rifle Association
This is is due to "serious licensing irregularities" discovered during an arms audit conducted at the two venues on Tuesday, says the Singapore Police Force.
SINGAPORE: Police have seized firearms from the Singapore Gun Club and the Singapore Rifle Association due to "serious licensing irregularities," the Singapore Police Force (SPF) said in a statement on Saturday (Feb 6).
SPF said its Police Licensing and Regulatory Department had found these irregularities while conducting an audit at the armouries of the two clubs on Tuesday. Police investigations are ongoing, it added.
Channel NewsAsia understands that more than 70 guns were unaccounted for. These guns belonged to members who have died, quit the clubs or left Singapore, and no proper records were kept.
A sign put up outside the National Shooting Centre on Saturday afternoon showed it was closed to all shooting activities except for national training, due to "infrastructure works to enhance the security of the ranges". However, in a statement sent later that day, Sport Singapore confirmed that it had ordered the closure due to the irregularities.
"SportSG has asked the Singapore Shooting Association to implement measures to correct the situation before opening up for public use," said the national sports body, though it also added that it would be "using this opportunity to do enhancement works" to the facility.
Channel NewsAsia understands that as a result of the closure, a friendly shooting competition between Singapore and Japan slated for Feb 14, has been cancelled.
