SINGAPORE - Entering the teaching profession has emerged as the number one career choice for children in Singapore, beating the likes of law enforcement and being an entrepreneur, said human resources consultancy Adecco Singapore in a press release on Wednesday (Jan 6).

This revelation was made after a survey of children aged 7 to 14 was conducted by the company to find out about children's perspective on life, family and career.

According to the Adecco Children's Survey, 14 per cent of children indicated 'teacher' as their top career choice. One child said he/she wanted to be a teacher to 'educate the next generation', while another said that being a teacher would mean 'you will know everything'.

Another 13 per cent wanted to be police officers as they wanted to uphold justice and help 'many people'. Following the footsteps of successful entrepreneur Bill Gates was also a popular choice at 11 per cent.

However, teaching was overtaken by 'policeman or policewoman' as the 'coolest job in the world'. Other less orthodox 'cool' jobs indicated include being an ice-cream seller and a gold trader, but rather worryingly, one child mentioned that 'not having to work' is the best 'job' in the world.

Not contented with having a routine nine-to-five job when they grow up, some of the respondents have opted for a more glamourous route as a 'popstar' due to their strong passion for singing and dancing, while another indicated that he would like to be a construction worker so that he can 'build houses for families to stay together'. One child even upped the level of ambition by declaring that 'it is fun' to be a president of the country.

Overall, motivations behind the children's choices seemed to be based on the things they were passionate about, current events, and things they learned from role models such as parents and teachers. According to Adecco, many of the children displayed an intrinsic passion towards helping others, which is why teacher and law enforcement were among the top careers picked.

"It is heartening that the career aspirations of children in Singapore are largely driven by positive core values around helping others and awareness of current events," said Femke Hellemons, Country Manager, Adecco Singapore.

When it comes to the dollars and cents, the children surveyed are just as decisive. 31 per cent stated an expected salary range of $5,001 to S$10,000 per month and 12 per cent expected $10,000 and above.

When asked about what they would do as prime minister or president of Singapore, the answers provided by the children were varied and creative. From 'helping other countries in need' and 'improving the MRT system to prevent breakdowns', to 'give free ice-cream for all the kids' and 'turning staircases into slides at school', it seems that the world is their oyster.
