Remember that weighing machine in Bukit Batok MRT Fairprice that was not doing its one and only job?

It now appears that it was sabo-ed by a misaligned tray.

After an investigation (which probably included several rounds of interrogation in the company of bright lights and stale coffee), NTUC Fairprice Corporate Communications Director Jonas Kor wrote in to Mothership.sg and clarified that the weighing machine was only recently calibrated for accuracy and that the error was due to a misaligned tray on the machine.

Because of this weighing-gate, all weighing machines at all Fairprice stores are being rechecked and staff have to reweigh all produce to ensure accuracy. #siong

Kor also maintained that all weighing machines are regularly inspected and calibrated and surprise checks by mystery weighers authorities are also conducted.

You can read the entire letter here:

Our investigation revealed that the weighing error was due to a misaligned tray on the affected weighing scale. This was an isolated incident and was rectified immediately when it was discovered. Records have indicated that the affected weighing scale was just recently calibrated for accuracy. It has since been re-checked again and verified by the authorities today.

We assure customers that no other scales in the store were affected. For added assurance, we have also instructed all our stores island wide to recheck their weighing scales and to re-weigh all produce to ensure accuracy. Additional measures have been implemented to ensure that such an error does not occur again.

All scales at FairPrice outlets are regularly inspected and calibrated by a government certified vendor. The scales are also frequently checked by store operations staff and surprise checks are conducted by the authorities to ensure that the scales comply to industry standards and guidelines.

To safeguard the interests of our customers we also have in place a policy where we will honour a full refund or exchange for products that have been inaccurately labelled.

Customers may contact our customer relations hotline at 6552-2722 or email us at [email protected] should they have any enquiries or feedback to share.

We thank Mr Ng for the feedback and apologise for any inconvenience caused to him and his neighbour.

We hereby apologise to the weighing machine. We totally understand how it feels to be sabo-ed by a colleague.

However, an investigation is due to find out why the tray is not doing its job properly.

Thank you.
