SINGAPORE: Two were injured in a fire at Far East Plaza on Saturday night (Oct 24), which saw hundreds evacuated to the streets.

The fire originated from a shop's storeroom on the second floor of the plaza.

According to the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), a woman in her twenties suffered burns on both her palms, while a man in his fifties had inhaled smoke. Both had been trying to stop the fire before SCDF arrived.

SCDF said about 250 people were already evacuated by personnel from Far East Plaza when they arrived. A video posted on Twitter by Iris L saw people crowding outside the mall after being evacuated.

Member of the public Charlene Tan, who had sent photos, said everyone had to evacuate after hearing the fire alarm ring.

SCDF was alerted to the incident at 7.44pm. Within 15 minutes, they extinguished the fire using one internal house and four dry powder extinguishers. They had dispatched two fire engines, two red rhinos and five support vehicles.

The shopping centre has been closed off until declared safe.
