LG Ng Chee Meng
Among the enviable records to his name, Ng Chee Meng is
- the second pilot to be appointed Chief of Defence Force.
- the shortest-serving Chief of Defence Force.
- the highest-ranked general to ever enter politics.
With such a CV, he makes his next career move, claiming,
“…he wanted to give back to society after benefitting from Singapore’s
meritocratic system…When we have some successes, we take care of the rest to
make sure that we create the same opportunities, if not better opportunities,
for others to succeed (and) for future generations to succeed.”

It’s necessary to remind ourselves that Ng is the only general in the world
who, on 1 Jul 2014, barely 16 months after his elevation to CDF declared,
““Today, we can bring lethal firepower at a very short time to hit moving
targets — one shot, one kill…This is a capability that few armed forces in the
world possess, and we have the capabilities to ensure that we fulfil our mission

As far as we know, no other army (such as USA, Britain, Netherlands, France,
Israel that have actually fought real wars, not just sand model types) or, for
that matter, military chief has ever made such an astonishing claim. Perhaps, LG
Ng is just a little given to exaggeration. Or ‘tau pianh’ (big bluff).
He now spins that he wants to ‘give back to society’ and that he is ‘indebted
to Singapore’, hence his next career move into politics. Let’s not kid ourselves
that he means he is going into the elections hoping to spend most of his time at
his Meet-the-People sessions. This general, like all the generals that went
before him, is destined for the Big Time. PM Lee himself has already made it
clear that he is in full charge – to grant or guarantee any one of his favoured
candidates a ‘cabinet position’ as he has revealed in ex-Admiral Liu’s
departure, never mind that the public transport system is no better than it was
when Liu took over post GE2011. This is a government shown to function on
efforts, not results, as long as one remains loyal to the boss.
So, what’s in it for Ng? For all the highfalutin claims made by Ng himself
and his boss, (another Ng?) Eng Hen, and all ‘the blessing of my family’ and all
the other unquantifiable bells and whistles leading to his inevitable entry into
high political office, here are the quantifiable considerations that must have
crossed any general’s mind in deciding on his career options;

It is therefore a no-brainer of a career move to give up S$400,000 in order
to be guaranteed 3X more take-home pay. Between professing ‘to give back to
society’ and repaying one’s ‘indebtedness’ the next 5 years with a money pile
awaiting at the exit, you don’t need to be a general to make that strategic
career move.
One thing is for sure, there is no such instance of salary leap and
remuneration in the private sector. Uniquely Singapore’s PAP. (Or should that be
Uniquely PAP’s Singapore? Voters will have to decide next GE.)
Meantime, the Mrs will surely
approve.
