Singaporeans cannot have a bright future with a
one-party government

As elections are coming, we have been reading all sorts of
which-PAP-minister-said-what news in the mainstream media. Amongst all of these,
I have never felt so disgusted reading what PM Lee said: “And I ask voters,
please vote for the PAP team. Vote for me and my team so that you and your
children can have a brighter future.”

Can we really have a bright future with the PAP team as the sole
party in parliament?

Given the opposition was a virtually non-existent in 2006 to 2011, we have
seen how a single party rule can have negative impact on our country. Hospital
beds declined while the population went up by 40% in the past decade while the
HDB resale index doubled in half a decade with a population influx that was not
matched by infrastructural growth.

Have we had a stronger opposition movement then, things may very well have
been different. As former DPM puts it, the PAP was “sensitive to issues and was
circumspect” when they were 26-25. Even as they lost one GRC to the opposition,
they still lacked consultation when they pushed through the population white
paper using the party whip.

The fact that the issues were not fully resolved in 2013 highlights a
government that is irresponsible and not willing to solve the issues before
committing to a 6.9 million population. Even as Khaw claims to housing market to
have stabilised, he has not fulfilled his aim of bringing down the average BTO
price to 4 years’ of median applicant income as earlier intended.

An average 4-room BTO in Sengkang retails for $290,000 while the average
applicant’s income is $4,100 making that 5.89 times of income. After factoring
$30,000 for renovations and all, that is a 6 times price to income factor, a
number which is considered unaffordable by UN standards. Is this what we want
when we hope for our children to have a brighter future?

We have heard the how the ministry of manpower still accepts applicants with
unaccredited degrees in the civil service as long as they have the requisite
experience. Can we imagine how this deters the future of our children,
especially those without degrees? And for those lucky enough, what about the
substantial student debt when state resources are being used on scholarships to
foreigners?

Clearly, a good and challenging aim for GE2015 would be to increase the
parliamentary presence of the opposition camp so as to push the PAP to work
harder for Singaporeans.
