I chanced upon the Housing Board's terms in its sales launch, one of which states that "singles who apply for the two-room flats under the Single Singapore Citizen Scheme will pay $15,000 more than married couples".

It is puzzling why singles have to pay more. Remaining single should not be discriminated against and penalised, much less by the authorities, which have been trying to build an inclusive society.

The demographic landscape of Singapore has changed in the past decades, with more choosing to remain single, or marrying at a later age. These singles could opt to purchase their own flat if they meet HDB's eligibility criteria.

Unfortunately, HDB policies do not seem to have taken this demand into consideration.

All Singaporeans, whether singles or married couples, deserve equal rights to build their home in Singapore.
