At least 18 laboratories and an Air Force base in South Korea received anthrax samples from a batch in which live bacteria was discovered after it was distributed by the U.S. Army, and recovery of them is still ongoing, said a spokesman with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday.
The anthrax originated at Dugway Proving Ground, an Army base in Utah where biological and chemical weapons are tested and maintained. They were sent to the laboratories to be used in a Defense Department program to develop better ways to test for anthrax in the field.
The incident involves at least nine states and Osan Air Base in South Korea, an Air Force installation that also received a sample from the same batch. At least 22 people at Osan may have been exposed, and will receive medical examinations, antibiotics and other treatment, defense officials said in a statement. None has shown any signs of exposure, but the sample was destroyed by a hazardous materials (HAZMAT) team with the 51st Fighter Wing on Wednesday after it was discovered, Air Force officials said.

The distribution was first disclosed by the Defense Department on Wednesday. Jason McDonald, the CDC spokesman, said a commercial laboratory contacted the agency late May 22 and asked for help after it discovered that a sample of anthrax it received from the Defense Department wasn’t dead.
“It was growing anthrax, and they needed technical assistance,” McDonald said of the bacterial culture the laboratory was processing.
All of the samples distributed by Dugway have since been secured, McDonald said. The ones in the United States will be brought to CDC’s laboratories in Atlanta using special packaging and handling, and then put into bacterial culturing for five days to determine whether they are alive. The samples in question were sent to labs in Texas, Wisconsin, Delaware, New Jersey, Tennessee, New York, California and Virginia, a defense official said Wednesday, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the issue.
“The samples are stilling coming in,” McDonald said. “We’re going to treat them all as though they are alive.”

Army Chief of Staff Gen. Raymond T. Odierno told reporters Thursday that human error likely resulted in the problem, according to The Associated Press. The samples distributed by Dugway are typically irradiated to kill them, but something went amiss in the process.
The live sample discovered was sent from Dugway to the U.S. Army Edgewood Chemical Biological Center, a military facility at Aberdeen Proving Ground northeast of Baltimore, and then to the commercial laboratory that called for help. U.S. officials have declined to name that facility or the others that received samples from the same batch.
The Pentagon released a statement acknowledging the collection of live samples, and said there was no known risk to the general public. An investigation into what happened is ongoing.
“For further information, we will allow the investigation to reveal the issues involved in this situation,” the Pentagon statement said.
