A English Language translator from China was sentenced to 5 months in jail on Thursday for sitting the IELTS test for someone else. The IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is a standardised test often used to determine someone's proficiency in English.

Good results in IELTS are often required for various official purposes including for migration, employment, admission into certain institutions and more.
Lina Zhang, 29, was paid 7,000 yuan (S$1,500) to sit the test and pass it for another Chinese National, Ge Li.

In order to get into the examination venue, Lina had used a Forged China Passport. The Fake passport had all the details of Ge Li but it had Ms Zhang's face.
However, the forged passport was not good enough as an invigilator at the exam had noticed something was wrong with the passport and raised the alarm about it.

It was later found that the passport was fake and that the person sitting the exam was not in fact Ge Li.

Zhang pleaded guilty to cheating by personation and the court noted that there were some elements to indicate the involvement of a syndicate.

The person she was paid to impersonate remains on the loose. Ge Li's exact identity and whereabouts are unclear.
