Science researcher Juliana Chan is possibly the highest-qualified participant in the history of the pageant, which already boasts a lawyer, veterinarian and Nominated MP among past winners.

Juliana, 22, is a scholar with the Agency For Science, Technology And Research (A*Star) and is also the poster girl for its new print ad campaign.

And looking at her sterling academic background, you can conclude she was picked not just for her looks.

Having recently graduated from Cambridge University with first-class honours in biochemistry, her next step is to pursue her PhD at the prestigious MIT (Massachusetts Institute Of Technology) in September.

After that, she will serve the remaining five years of her bond with A*Star and hopes to eventually become a professor at the National University Of Singapore.

Juliana's earlier academic records are just as impressive.

The former school prefect topped CHIJ Katong Convent (Secondary) throughout her four years there, including the O levels.

She went on to Victoria Junior College where she became the triple science faculty captain, an active debater and played violin with the string ensemble.

She took 44th spot there in the A levels, scoring four As and distinctions in biology and mathematics S papers.

FITTING IN

Obviously, this makes Juliana quite an anomaly in a beauty pageant which detractors often label as a flesh parade for bimbos.

But if you weren't privy to her scholastic background, the leggy, fair-skinned bikini babe would blend right in with the rest of the contestants.

This became very apparent during a photo shoot for the Miss Singapore Universe 2006 Prelude show on Sisters' Islands last week.

Hosted by MTV VJs May and Choy, the half-hour special airing tonight gives a preview of the 25 semi-finalists vying for the crown.

Besides being extremely bright and confident, Juliana is also self-deprecating and funny, like when she joked: 'I signed away my life to (A*Star), longer than some marriages you know!'

She also has the PR skills of a potential beauty queen down pat - immediately introducing herself to this reporter, name card in hand.

Juliana told The New Paper during a break: 'I'm a nerd. I've always wanted to do well. I'm very studious and very driven.'

She added that jaws drop on countless occasions at parties or media events when people find out about her occupation.

The Ministry Of Sound and Coco Latte regular said with a laugh: 'I'm the weirdest scientist you'll ever see.

'I am quite talkative and sociable so it destroys the mental image people have of a science geek.

'That aside, I am really a geek as science is completely exciting to me.'

So why waste her time joining something as seemingly frivolous as Miss Singapore Universe?

According to Juliana - who stands at 1.72m and weighs 52kg - it was her Cambridge schoolmates who goaded her into it, while A*Star chairman Philip Yeo and her parents (dad is a remisier, mum runs an optical shop) gave their permission.

She also reasoned that it was 'either now or never', as by the time she returns from the US, she'd be 28, too old for any such gig.

NO BIMBO

She added: 'I joined because I knew the winners weren't stupid. Anyway, I'm not a bimbo. You can call me ugly, but you cannot call me stupid.'

Juliana admitted that although she isn't the most gorgeous girl in the competition or the best poser or walker, she has 'the package', which will shine through once she gets to the Q&A stage.

She added: 'Some girls have big boobs or beautiful long lustrous hair. I have my brain. That's my unique selling point and I think the judges value that.'

Juliana also hopes to debunk the stereotype that A*Star scholars are dorky, boring, ugly, socially-inept muggers.

'My chairman has been trying to promote scholars who do ballroom dancing, sing and are well-rounded. He wants to promote the image that science is fun and cool,' she said.

Asked about her love life, she jokingly said she would 'want to marry someone from MIT'.

Juliana, who is single, said her only serious boyfriend was another A*Star scholar. But their three-year long-distance relationship fizzled out after they graduated from university.

Meanwhile, would Juliana succumb to bond-breaking if she wins Miss Singapore Universe and all sorts of ambassadorial duties or entertainment contracts get thrown her way?

She looked surprised at the thought. Anyway A*Star has allowed scholars to defer their studies when it came to acting jobs, she said.

'I thought I'd cross the bridge when I get there. If (Miss Singapore Universe organiser Derrol Stepenny Promotions) needs me to do anything, I can always fly back,' she said.

In fact, she's always dreamt of hosting a 20/20 Barbara Walters-type show in which she interviews Nobel Prize laureates and pioneering scientists who fly via Singapore.

She hopes it may finally materialise if she becomes the next Miss Singapore.

She said: 'I don't want to do safe entertainment shows. I would like to be remembered as a girl who dreamt big and achieved big things.'
