IS TRS THE ROOT CAUSE OF XENOPHOBIA IN SINGAPORE?

Do you feel annoyed with the number of foreigners in Singapore because other Singaporeans have shared their 'xenophobic' opinions on our platform or do you feel annoyed due to the stresses you personally encounter in your daily life?

We have nothing against foreigners in our country, most of these people are just here to seek a better life for themselves. We simply share the feelings and thoughts that Singaporeans share with us which they cannot air elsewhere such as in our highly controlled mainstream media. In addition to that, many of you will also know that we share political views and 'expose' issues not shown otherwise in the 153rd (https://sg.news.yahoo.com/singapore-falls-three-places-in-press-freedom-ranking-080508348.html) ranked (https://sg.news.yahoo.com/singapore-falls-three-places-in-press-freedom-ranking-080508348.html) Mainstream Media in terms of Press Freedom.

In relation to the ongoing police investigations, many mainstream media reports have accused TRS of fabricating or embellishing details to fan xenophobia and they have also embellished their own reports with unverified information to paint our website in a bad light. Some outlets, including STOMP and TNP have made wild accusations (http://therealsingapore.com/content/tnp-publishes-false-information-and-pulls-innocent-friends-and-family) but at the same time failed to cite their own sources. We suppose this is to be expected.

There are reports from mainstream media claiming that 2/3 of the people behind TRS are foreigners. This is untrue. There are more Singaporeans than foreigners in our team who help to run TRS. A better estimation of the number of Foreigners/Singapore PR helping out at TRS is about 15%. We do not actually discriminate people who want to contribute to or be editors of our website as long as they have enough knowledge about Singapore and show a keen interest. We publish letters which are shared with us and while these are mosly received from Singaporeans, we do also publish letters from Foreigners or PRs as they also are affected by what happens here and often have interesting insights to share.

We would like to clarify that the particular article under investigation was put together based on several witness accounts and comments about the Thaipusam incident and just one readers' name was appended on the end. The witness accounts are either sent directly to us or shared with us from comments on photos and videos of the incident shared widely on social media. This is a common method used by us when we compile accounts and information about developing stories.

On this occasion, we had included details from an unverified source who claimed that they were at the incident when it turns out the information they were sharing was actually false. We failed to properly verify this before it appeared on our website. This has resulted in some misdirected anger and we sincerely apologise for any confusion caused.

We would like to also highlight that contrary to what is being said in mainstream media, we DO NOT routinely or deliberately fabricate news to fan xenophobia.

Unfortunately, we do regularly receive submissions containing deliberately fabricated stories from those who mean our website harm. While we try our best to sort these and avoid publishing false accounts, sometimes, it is very difficult to verify facts especially due to the lack of site moderators and the sheer amount of submission we receive. Flagged articles that are proven to be false are quickly removed from our website or notes are added by our editors to highlight certain points of misinformation.

In concept, we try to be like Wikipedia where collective knowledge and contributions are used to share information. There will be times when false information is hosted but overall, they are doing a good job thanks to the many moderators who keep it accurate, this is an area we can improve on and will work on.

We aim to be a platform to allow people to air their views and share their experiences. There are certainly some letters which in hindsight, should not have been approved and when we do receive a lot of negative feedback from the public, we will generally review the issues and take action as necessary.

There is always room for improvement and our editors do make mistakes. We hope that overall, readers still appreciate what we are trying to do by giving people a voice where they otherwise would not be heard.

As with any platform, we cannot control the submissions we receive and we do not practice selective publication to distort public opinion. Generally, people who are happy with the current system do not write to us, if they want to voice out, they can often do so in the letters sections of mainstream newspapers.

We publish letters roughly in proportion to the views we receive. We do also publish pro-establishment letters when we receive them. If our website hosts many xenophobic opinion pieces, this is because they are the views and submissions we receive from aggrieved members of the public who felt that their views can never be published or expressed through the mainstream media. We will try our best to accommodate them as well because we believe many of their concerns and genuine and sincere.
