SINGAPORE: Public transport operator SMRT is looking at installing charging points at more MRT stations after receiving positive feedback about its trial which started last year.

To date, SMRT has five stations with charging points. They were first launched at City Hall last July, while the other charging points at Orchard, Tanjong Pagar, Kent Ridge and Ang Mo Kio were launched a month later.

SMRT would not say which MRT stations would be installed with charging points in future.

“We found that approximately 25 people use the charging points each day, especially on weekends at popular stations like Orchard and Ang Mo Kio,” said Mr Patrick Nathan, SMRT’s vice-president of corporate information and communications, in response to TODAY’s queries.

Noting that service initiatives are important to provide commuters with a positive travel experience, Mr Nathan said the trial was started to allow them to charge their mobile devices for free should they need to contact someone urgently. Feedback from commuters, especially students and office workers, showed that they usually charged their devices at the designated points while waiting for their friends.

“SMRT remains focused and committed to improving our operational performance through on-going maintenance and upgrading programmes,” said Mr Nathan.
