Life Corporation, the company which was contracted to build the temple and columbarium at a site reserved for a Chinese Temple in Sengkang West, has said that it was upfront, open and transparent in its tender bid.

Life Corp was awarded the parcel of state land after bidding $5.2 million for it and submitting its plans in accordance with the tender guidelines and requirements.

The company later came under fire when residents of Fernvale Lea, where the columbarium was going to be situation, pointed out that Life Corp was not related to any religious entity and it had no experience building temples.

It was also found out that the company was a private, profit-making company and residents were concerned that they had been duped as their BTO brochure said the site was for a Chinese Temple.

After many complaints, Khaw Boon Wan finally promised that there would not be a commercial columbarium built on the land and said that his officers had just assumed that Life Corp was non-profit and a religious organisation which was not the case.

Since the development, Life Corp, which is listed on the Australian Securities Exchange, explained that it was “open and transparent” during the entire tender process. At no time did it hide the fact that it was a private, for-profit company and the company said it submitted all required information.

The company also added that it had planned to have religious individuals head the development of the temple component of the site and it has already made plans for temple operations.

Life Corp said that they are also working with the government to ensure they can arrive at a mutually satisfactory and viable solution.

There are of course challenges as LifeCorp had entered the $5.2 million bid expecting that they would run commercial services at the site. It is not currently known if the tender price will need to be changed.
