The tunnelling work for the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL) has forced a church to close after the construction affected the building's safety.
The Church of the Holy Spirit has been forced to close indefinitely after its floor tiles buckled and a long crack appeared on the exterior of its building.
“The floor tiles on the left side of our chapel have buckled, possibly due to extensive TEL MRT tunnelling work next to the parish. Some tiles have cracked. For safety reasons, our chapel is closed indefinitely,” the church said on its Facebook.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that the cracks are non-structural, but we will investigate fully the cause of the damage,” the Land Transport Authority (LTA) told Today. It is discussing with the church on how to repair the cracked tiles on the toilet floor.
The church has a history of more than 50 years. It is located next to the construction site for the Upper Thomson MRT Station.
Mr Joseph Bong, the church’s head of pastoral care for the Sick Ministry, told Today that the church found out about the building's problems two to three weeks ago.
In fact, the road next to the church also cracked but it has since been repaired by Sato Kogyo.
Sato Kogyo Singapore is the company which won the contract to build the station. Construction for the station began in the first quarter of last year. Work is expected to be completed in 2019.

The church has been meeting with the LTA and Sato Kogyo every month since September last year to update on the construction's effects to the church.
Mr Bong is looking for quotations for companies to fix the building's problems and hopes to reopen the church by the middle of next year.
The church is however paying for the repair works for now as it wants to find out how much more damage will be done to its building instead of “giving (the LTA) bits and pieces” of the damages.
“It is worrying, as it may get worse as more roads are dug up ... Sad because it was renovated not long ago.”, an attendee to the church, Madam Judy Tan, 69, said.
But this is not the first time that the construction at the Upper Thomson MRT Station has created problems. Early last month, a pipe leaked creating a flood at Upper Thomson, leading to traffic jams.
