Singapore Judicial College launched

SINGAPORE — A college which aims to bring all of Singapore’s judicial training together has been launched, said Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon at the opening of the Legal Year today (Jan 5).

The college called the Singapore Judical College and housed within the Supreme Court, is one of the initiatives which CJ Menon said in his speech today.

CJ Menon — who noted that Singapore has a relatively small pool of judges — said till today, judical training has been largely decentralised with each court taking the responsbility for organising programmes suited to its own needs.

As judges have been the core of Singapore’s legal development and must continue to lead in changing times, the college, also aims to develop and strengthen the curricula so as to enhance the ability to discharge judical functions.

“This will cover induction as well as continuing training and development of our Judges; but will also extend to technical assistance and education (programmes) that we may offer to colleagues from other jurisdictions to share the experience we have built up over the years in such areas as the use of technology, organisational excellence, active case management and judiciary-led reforms,” said CJ Menon.

The Singapore International Commerical Court (SICC), established as a division of the High Court to hear international Commerical disputes governed by Singapore and foreign laws was also launched today.

International judges can also be appointed to hear specific cases at the SICC or appeals on its judgments.

Some of the judges on the Bench of the SICC includes the Honourable Dr Irmgard Griss, former President of the Austrian Supreme Court.
