The Maritime Authority of Singapore (MPA) said that an estimated 4,500 tonnes of crude oil was spilled near Horsburgh Lighthouse, following the collision between oil tanker Alyarmouk and Sinar Kapuas, the bulk carrier on 2 January.
The oil spill estimation figure was quoted from V.Ships UK, the manager of the 116,039 dwt oil tanker, Alyarmouk.
"Two oil spill response companies have been activated to combat the resultant oil spill. The companies have since deployed four craft equipped with dispersants, oil booms and skimmers to the site." said MPA in its press release.
However, MPA does not rule out that the oil patches may affect northern parts of the island of Bintan, Indonesia due to the movement of tidal currents. Thus, MPA has corresponded with the Indonesian authorities to tackle the oil spill jointly in the Straits of Malacca and Singapore with offer of assistance in containment operations.
Previously, the Libya-flagged oil tanker Alyarmouk has collided with a Singapore-flagged bulk carrier off Horsburgh Lighthouse, also referred by Singapore as Pedro Branca at 0600 hours local time on 2 January 2015.
Alyarmouk, operated by Libya's General National Maritime, suffered damage to one of her cargo tanks, causing some oil spillage in the area. Then, MPA immediately dispatched a helicopter to assess the situation and broadcast alerts to inform ships near the vicinity. Since then, Alyarmouk and Samudera-owned Sinar Kapuas had been anchored safely for inspection with no reports of injury and traffic in port and the Strait of Singapore remains unaffected.
