AS A taxi driver, I do understand Mr Tan Teck Leng's concern about commuters not being able to get a cab if they do not book one ("Tame taxi booking before it turns into a monster"; Monday).

It is slightly more difficult to get a taxi only during certain periods and at certain areas.

The "high demand" periods are from 7.30am to 10.30am, 3.30pm to 4.45pm, 5.30pm to 7pm, and 9.30pm to 10.30pm.

Those who do not wish to book a taxi can stand a higher chance of getting one if they travel outside these periods.

Taxi stands that cabbies tend to avoid are those at Hitachi Tower (no stopping just before the taxi stand), Straits Trading Building and One Raffles Place (getting to these taxi stands may take at least 15 minutes because of the traffic jam).

Commuters may wish to go to other taxi stands around these areas if they do not want to make a booking.

Taxi drivers are self-employed and time is of the essence to them. A minority wait for call bookings but most of us do pick up non-booking passengers.
