<div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden">KUALA LUMPUR - Some people are born not being certain of their gender and feel different from the way they look, said former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

He said some of these people may look like men but they feel like women and vice versa.

"Their feelings are different from their looks," he said at a press conference during the Kuala Lumpur Summit 2014 here on Tuesday.

Dr Mahathir made that remark when he was asked to comment on whether he thought the Sya*riah and civil court judges should sit together to hear the cross-dressing case.

He said it would be great to have such a relationship but it was also up to the Government to think about it.

Last Friday, the Court of Appeal declared that the Negri Sembilan Islamic religious enactment barring cross-dressing contravened the Federal Constitution.

On Monday, the Negri Sem-bilan Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said the state government would file an appeal to the Federal Court in the next few days.

Dr Mahathir also pointed out that dressing was a contemporary issue.

"We say a certain type of clothing is men's clothing but men and women are wearing jeans.

"So is jeans for men or women?

"In the past, men and women dressed differently but now, things have changed," he said.

On another matter, Dr Mahathir said Malaysians could do without the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).

He said the funds that the government-owned investment company received were borrowed and if they were lost, it would create more problems.

"1MDB tak ada pun tak apa (it does not matter if 1MDB ceases to exist)," he added.

Dr Mahathir said the 1MDB's sovereign wealth was but borrowed money.

"If we borrowed it, we need to pay it back. If we lose them, there would be more problems and the cost will be high too," he said.
