Human Rights Lawyer M Ravi’s memoir, Kampong Boy, has been shortlisted for the Singapore Literature Prize in the English non-fiction category.
His book is one of five which made the shortlist.
Kampong Boy was published in 2013 and it is an autobiography of one of Singapore’s leading human rights lawyers, M Ravi.
It shares many accounts of his life growing up in Singapore when it was still a Kampong and it goes into the details of several of the high profile legal cases which M Ravi has been involved in including politically sensitive cases.
The book also looks into M Ravi’s activism on topics such as the death penalty and the right for free assembly and free speech as well as equal rights for the LGBT community.
The other books shortlisted in the same category include ‘Kampong Spirit: Gotong Royong’ by Josephine Chia and ‘The Mango Tree’ by Hidayah Amin, both of which are also memoirs.
A guide ‘The Leader, The Teacher & You’ by Lim Siong Guan and Joanne Lim, as well as photobook ‘A Visual Celebration of Giant Pandas’ by Fanny Lai and photographer Bjorn Olesen were also shortlisted in the same category.
