TEKKA CENTRE HAWKER CENTRE SEES INCREASE IN ROWDY BEHAVIOUR SINCE LITTLE INDIA ALCOHOL RESTRICTIONS

Tekka Centre hawker centre has seen a sharp increase in the number of instances of rowdy behaviour especially on weekend as more foreign workers choose to drink there and hand out following the increased restrictions on the sale of alcohol in Little India.
Police are now even asking stallholders to stop selling bottled beer at the Tekka Centre Hawker Centre following a few cases where a beer bottle has been used as a weapon.
For example, last month, a drunk man hit a 19 year old busboy working in the hawker centre with a broken glass bottle before running away.
The Police had suggested that stallholders stop selling drinks in glass bottled for three months so that they can monitor whether or not he instances of fights reduces.
However, stallholders are not too keen on the idea feeling that it won’t help the situation and will only cause them more trouble.
Some are worried that the patrons may just bring their own liquor bottles, which may be even stronger in alcohol content than the beer currently sold at the Hawker Centre.
The growing problem has also meant that the hawker centre now hires security guards on Sunday evenings to set up barriers and keep the rowdy foreign workers from taking up the spare room.
The foreign workers are moving to the Tekka centre hawker centre to relax, socialise and drink ever since April when a new Public Order (Additional Temporary Measures) Act was passed which put heavy restrictions on the sale of alcohol in Little India.
Now, shops in little India can only sell alcohol until 8pm on weekends and alcohol cannot be consumed in public places outside of licensed premise.
The ban is 1-year for now with more evaluation to take place at the end of the ban. However, for smaller businesses, their business has taken a hit and the future is uncertain.
This alcohol ban has affected many local Singaporeans, not only business owners in Little India but also those who used to go to surrounding areas to relax and eat. Instead of the foreign workers having their own space in Little India, they have now simply moved on to other areas. It seems the alcohol restrictions have not fixed the problem at all and have only moved the problems to areas where there are even more Singaporeans.
Drinkers will continue to find places to drink and enjoy themselves so it looks like the alcohol bans are only hurting Singaporeans further.
