During the IIMPACT dialogue session yesterday, PM Lee Hsien Loong spoke about many issues related to Singapore-India ties.

He also spoke about other issues such as how the internet has changed the way the people communicate and how this can contribute to greater social unrest.
He said that "Knowledge is not free" and explained that the internet can lead to a lot of misinformation.

“Yes, it’s more readily available, but so is disinformation and so is misinformation, so is misunderstanding. And if you looked at what has happened worldwide, the Internet has not caused a great convergence on universal truth. Far from it,” he said.

“It has led to divisions and all kinds of different ideas being able to take root and germinate, which are completely contradictory to one another, and groups which are completely antithetic to each other,” he added.

“And we have to make sure that with the internet, with social media, we don’t get seduced by, really, the delusion that we know everything, that what we know is the truth, and we are the sole possessors, and therefore, we will fight it out to the end. Because that way, you will fracture the society and be less able to form a consensus and move forward together.”

Mr Lee said his personal view is that human society was not designed with the Internet age in mind.

In the pre-Internet days, there are lags – information disseminates over a period of time.
“You have time to think it over, (let it) sink in, discuss it, and gradually form what we hope is a wise consensus,” he said. :kma:

“But today, all of that is telescoped and the splash goes out tonight, and tomorrow morning, everybody knows the answer, which may be the wrong answer. In fact, far from having a faster circuit, you have a short circuit collectively, and that is a real problem which I don’t think people have found solutions to.” :*:

Mr Lee continued, “In Singapore sometimes, you have a case where somebody says something outrageous – tomorrow, everybody knows about it, and everybody expresses great outrage and we spend a long time calming ourselves down. Yes, it was an outrageous statement, but do we need to get worked up every time it happens?

=> Then why wanna sue Roy Ngerng and others till their pants drop???How do we prevent ourselves from getting worked up every time that happens? That’s not so easy.”

It seems that PM Lee thinks humans aren't meant to have the internet. Maybe he preferred the time when all citizens relied on newspaper for information and the government could easily control the information people received.

With the Internet, there is much more free-flowing internet and the people are forced to think more critically about what they are reading in order to be able to sift the truth from all the exaggerations and misinformation online.

This in turn also means the people have woken up more and are not so easily fooled by the propaganda churned out by the mainstream media, making it even harder for the PAP to keep a hold of Singapore.

Just as the internet has allowed people with differing views to meet and clash on certain issues, it has also united those with similar mindsets and made them stronger. How can PM Lee generalise and label the internet as a divisive technology?

Is this another excuse to impose more restrictions on the internet?
