Renault recently released their brand new Twizy, a new small electric vehicle which is a not quite a car and also not quite a motorcycle.

The vehicle is a 2 seater electric vehicle and it does not currently fall into any of the existing COE classifications.

Renault had originally applied for it to be a motorcycle but LTA said that it does not fit into this category.

The LTA also said that they had requested more information on the Twizy to determine whether it is suitable for Singapore roads.

The Twizy has been ready for over two months when Renault first announced plans to make it available in Singapore but since LTA has not quite decided how much tax and which COE to apply to it, it may still be a while longer before the Twizy is available for purchase in Singapore.

A spokesperson from the a Renault distributor here said that the Twizy is likely to be sold for about $20,000 on top of whatever the COE is.

In other countries around the world. the Twizy has been classified as a quadracycle where such vehicles are allowed on the road such as Italy and Germany.

The vehicle has a top speed of 80km/hr, has 2 doors and no aircon or proper windows. It is about 10 times less powerful than an average car but weighs too much to be classed as a motorcycle.

Given the environmentally friendly nature of the Twizy, there is pressure on the LTA to approve it for use. However, they must balance the positives with the need to control the car population to reduce congestion.
